Twilight of the Thunder God is pretty awesome. I'm looking forward to Surtur Rising.

Has it leaked yet?

xMalcolmXx 03-10-2011 10:50 AM

all obscura is bad

cosmogenesis and we are the nightmare are the only music i've ever deleted off my computer

Tyler 03-10-2011 01:04 PM

i dont think it's leaked yet no and it's decently heavy but i've only heard With Oden on our Side and onward

TheSpirit 03-10-2011 02:15 PM

adbforever 03-10-2011 03:24 PM

adbforever 03-10-2011 04:08 PM

Morumbar 03-10-2011 04:10 PM

Rating music.

/yawn

adbforever 03-10-2011 04:15 PM

nah it's pretty fun

I'm into music, statistics and samples so this is cool

Nepenthe 03-10-2011 04:19 PM

banality is fun

Morumbar 03-10-2011 04:21 PM

Idk, just whenever I have to pick one album I like over another or have to rate one, I get too tied up in all the different factors and looking at how aspects could be considered relative in different perspectives, idk, any rating always seems unfair or something.

adbforever 03-10-2011 04:22 PM

rating is easy

3.5's are solid

4's are really solid

4.5's are favorite albums

haven't given a 5
banality is fun
3/5

Tyler 03-10-2011 04:24 PM

ratings are meaningless but it's worth it just for the wishlist and cataloguing.

Nepenthe 03-10-2011 04:25 PM

that's the way i feel

summing up my entire feelings on any album is just banal

adbforever 03-10-2011 04:26 PM

like the thing with a lot of albums is they're really top heavy

the first half is like a 4 and the second half is like 3-3.5

a 10 point scale with intervals of .5 would be a lot better

Morumbar 03-10-2011 04:28 PM
that's the way i feel

That, and I'm just an extremely indecisive person when it comes to a lot of stuff.

See, I just couldn't put a dot behind "person", I had to relativise it with "when it comes to a lot of stuff" - not everything.

EDIT: idk if "relativise" is a word in English. "Relativeren" is a verb in Dutch.

Nepenthe 03-10-2011 04:32 PM
That, and I'm just an extremely indecisive person when it comes to a lot of stuff.
i'm with you on the perspectives thing. it's like some stuff i just like bc it's crushing and has riffs etc, and then there's music that's actually brilliant works of art, and i just can't grade those two categories (and there's tons more) on the same scale yknow.

adbforever 03-10-2011 04:37 PM

yea, you can

it comes down to how much resonance the song has, if there are a lot of awesome songs in an album it gets a high rating

I'm indecisive with ordering food because I want the best possible meal

but with rating albums you already have the album, listen to it and rate it. Not hard

Tyler 03-10-2011 04:38 PM

I just dont put much credence in my ratings. If I rated something between a 4 or 5, it's good. I've started loosening up on what I rate a 5. Some ratings are subjective, others are objective. They don't mean much.

adbforever 03-10-2011 04:41 PM

I'm the opposite, there is no such thing as a 5

4.5 is the highest I'll go.

Nepenthe 03-10-2011 04:52 PM

you're not getting it

there's albums i would rate a 5 as far as just being crushing and awesome
there's albums i would rate a 5 as far as being brilliant works of art

they are not equals in any way tho

publicastration 03-10-2011 04:56 PM

yeah, a 5 star album can be one you can put on any time and it's awesome, or something that's just brilliant.

I can't listen to The Great Annihilator all the time but it's an incredible album.

adbforever 03-10-2011 05:00 PM

I'm getting it, you listen to music that appeals to you

both appeal in such a way that they're a 5. They resonate with you regardless of style

Nepenthe 03-10-2011 05:02 PM

they are both 5's
but one of them is definitely better than the other
so how are they both 5's

perspectives

ratings are bullshit

Morumbar 03-10-2011 05:17 PM

Like, I'd rate Iced Earth's Night of the Stormrider a 5 for being a timeless classic. I don't think there's a single album in existence that I've listened to more often.

Although I wouldn't venture so far as to claim that it weighs up against, idk, to name one, Clint Mansell's The Fountain, which is much more intense and absorbing.

I mean, I can understand where Tyler's coming from. As long as you don't take the ratings too seriously, then it's cool, but there's no solid way to approach rating albums seriously when they are totally different in so many aspects.

Nepenthe 03-10-2011 05:24 PM

fountain soundtrack is so good

that little 'dundun dun dundun dun dun' synth/piano melody has been stuck in my head since that movie came out

dUSK 03-10-2011 06:13 PM

Thread is gayer than usual today.

rasputin 03-10-2011 11:35 PM

dUSK 03-11-2011 01:18 AM

I'm planning on it. I've got a ticket but I'm still waiting for confirmation from work that I can get that weekend off, which shouldn't be a problem. Will be booking flights etc as soon I can.

hismajestythepope 03-11-2011 08:21 PM

feav233 03-12-2011 08:11 AM

good stuff, will pry check out that pretty soon

rasputin 03-12-2011 08:44 PM

shit yeah, downloading it now

i love triune impurity rites. though ive been told by someone the new one is no where near as good

FatalEnergy 03-12-2011 10:57 PM

Just now getting around to listening to the new Atheist.

I don't know. It's not doing much for me. The only original members are the singer and drummer. A lot of the feel from the earlier albums isn't there.

DBlitz 03-12-2011 11:03 PM

yea i didn't think new athesit was very good. had some cool parts scattered throughout the album though.

rasputin 03-13-2011 10:27 PM

forgot how good monstrosity is
