So, any of you science guys, do you have any kind of elite method to memorizing ions? I never got around to doing so last year, and I really need some help this year, or I'll sink for sure. :p Ions suck.
NP: Tool- Third Eye LIVE
What do you mean memorising ions? It's just cations and anions. Do you mean the different valencies? |
I've been to the Rossmoor Target Center every day this week, my friends keep dragging me there when I'm broke and have no money. They sit around eating sandwiches from Togos and drinking Starbucks.
The bastards. :upset:
Ah, Starbucks...the largest ripoff of our time. Why, persay, is a TALL a SMALL? ITS NOT! FUCING! TALL! I hate coffee anyway, though... |

The bastards. :upset:
 That's a huge Target by the way. Meh, I'd go to Starbucks if I was loaded with cash, because the frappachinos are overprices as the dickens. I only usually drink coffee in the morning anyways. but Coffee Bean is still good... <3 |

One time, we got 5 people in one of the shopping carts and I had to push them around Target. Everyone was staring at us. |
So today I went to the Science museum and they had this INSANE exhibit. It was all dead bodies, but the skin was shaved off so you could see the insides, the bones and the muscles. They were all preserved of course, it was crazy though. Check it out.

Haha, poor you. Have you ever ate at the Z Pizza over there? It's great. I'd take it over Domino's and that Pizza Hut crap any day. |

I mean like how the fuck am I supposed to memorize 60 different jumbles of numbers letters and symbols in a week. Ferrous, ferric, etc.. Those things. I can basically name the ion when I have the symbol(Fe2+ or something) but I can't figure out the symbol when I have the name. Is there any sort of orderly method to learning these? |

Ferrous, ferric, etc.. Those things. I can basically name the ion when I have the symbol(Fe2+ or something) but I can't figure out the symbol when I have the name. Is there any sort of orderly method to learning these?
Just learn by rote. For example, after 5 years of Chemistry in HS and Uni, I can pretty much rattle off the first two lines of the periodic table with mass number, atomic number, valency etc, and from there can figure out most of the other elements by following the trend. Just use rote. For example, rous and ric are the only things you need to match up, if you have a strong grasp of greek and latin. Just learn by rote, that's the only way. EDIT: An easy way to remember ric and rous is "ric is gigantic and rous is a mouse". Because the more postive ion is always ric -> Cupric, Ferric, etc. ---- Can someone read my latest post in the hurricane thread in PNWI and see if it is too harsh? On re-reading, it sounds like I don't care, but I really do sympathise and empathise with people who live in Cylcone regions. I've got to go, but if it is too harsh, can someone just apologise for me underneath it? Thanks. |
I wouldn't say it was too harsh, just a little controversial :)
New Orleans has been trying for many years to get the levees higher, even a good 10 feet more. The federal government wouldn't ever look into it for some reason, maybe thinking it would be too costly. Ironic, huh? But even if the government said yes 6 months ago, it wouldn't have made much of a difference. It would take many years and possibly billions of dollars to raise and reinforce the levees. The people you've probably seen on TV staying in sports domes were: 1. too poor to get out of the city on time (New Orleans is one of the poorest cities in the country), or 2. [foolishly] decided to stay in the city and just wait out the storm. Sure, there was time for people to get out, but only a few days. It's very tough to get millions of people out of a major metropolitian area in a few days (obviously, it isn't easy). The primary blame on the flooding are the levees breaking. If they didn't break, there was a prediction that maybe 5%-10%, or at the very, very most, 15% would be under water. |
So, I'm listening to OK Computer right now, and I think that after 15 listens(according to Windows Media Player) I am starting to see and hear the amazingness that everyone always says is found on this album. Exit Music has always been a lackluster track for me, but I just listened to it, and wow, it was really quite amazing. I'm still really not totally feeling Subterrenian Homesick Alien, though.

It's the toughest album I've ever had to get into.
The one song I really liked the first time I heard it was Paranoid Android. Even Karma Police took a few listenings to really get. |
Greetings from the wreckage of Hurricane Katrina.
We just got power at 6:15 PM today. We didn't get the worst of the damage, but what we did get was pretty bad. A tree fell on my house, and put a hole through my roof, and lifted up the foundation of the house. :( I'm alright though. :thumb: |
So I've started "rebelling" against my girlfriend, so to speak.
She said I needed a haircut, even though I like my hair at this length. So in protest I've started growing a goatee even though she doesn't like it. I have no idea what I'm trying to prove here. Also, Jason I beg to differ. New Orleans didn't know they were going to be hit with the hurricane, nor did they know they know it was going to be Category 5, until a few days, which made it impossible to warn them "a week in advance" New Orleans hasn't been hit with a hurricane since 1965. And yes, while they should have raised the levees, there's really not a whole lot they can do now, right? |

That was a long time ago however. Now that my musical tastes have matured and developed (particularily my love for prog) perhaps I'll give it another listen, and give Radiohead a second chance. I'll probably be their biggest fanboy in a week. |
Mx irritatingly quiet tonight.
|
For some reason I have noticed that the Pit has had like 100 at this hour and R&M like 35. People dont like it anymore after they started banning people for spam. Whatever though its better this way because there arent a million retarted threads every night.
A good portion of MXers are college kids, so yeh.
Yeah but there are people from almost all the inhabited time zones so some college kids could be in between classes, some could be sleeping, etc. Im a high school kid who is starting boarding school this year, but all my friends go to public school so they are at school all day and go to bed early. Making my life boring. |

Tucson? Blegh, that sucks man. Speaking of Dredg, I think I hear the magic everyone hears in them. I was listening to Cathc Without Arms and I realized, "wow, this band really, really fucking rocks". |
I go to High School. I should be sleeping but I can't fall asleep. I have to wake up in like, 5 hours.

I dont really like Dredg, but I find it hard for me to like any bands that arent metal. Most of them just do not do it for me. Zeppfan(i forgot your first name) - do you go to Arizona State by any chance? |

I saw it on the gig calender, which I thought was for Tempe only, but I was wrong. It sucked because I was getting psyched I'd see them 3 times in one year...but 2 will have to cut it :p Yes, finally! Good man. I'm glad you are getting into them finally. EDIT: Ray, I have early classes, it's just not that late here. EDIT2: I do go to ASU, why? (P.S. 'Tis Vince) |

I wanted to go to College this year but, alas, I chose hockey for another year.

Just wondering. I know a couple people who go there. A senior named Cassidy Stark and a junior (Scotsman) who just started there this year Colin Strang. |
