I got a Dream Theater album.

I just...I wonder why they have such an awful singer when the rest of the band is talented. I HATE his voice.
The singer was MUCH better live than on any of the albums, which is weird.

For the guy who wants some DT but hasn't listened to any of it, just look on torrents.

Maggot Dream 03-12-2006 09:14 PM

You kidding? LaBrie is notorious for being awful live.

I think he's a good singer. He's got power, range, and some versatility, and I think his vocals add to the proggy-ness of the band.

fishbulb' 03-12-2006 09:17 PM

I was amazed too. But everybody who i went with thought that he was better live than on recordings... Weird.

White 03-12-2006 09:21 PM

hmmmmmm, Im working on a Social studies project due in about 12 hours lol, but I only have 15 minutes to get it done haha, so yeah, im not gonna be posting alot tonight.

Good choice.

rockindrummer 03-12-2006 09:36 PM

Some guy on a guitar forum said that keith moon and Bonham were better than buddy rich. Personally I don't think that's true, what do you guys think?

fishbulb' 03-12-2006 09:39 PM

They're completely different styles of music.

rockindrummer 03-12-2006 09:42 PM

That is a very good point. Hard to compare unless you took a clip of each of them soloing then you could compare the three, it would be absolutly pointless though.

Technial Ability < Creativity/Part Writing

For me at least. Its about the music man. I dig watchin buddy solo, hes inhuman, but bonham and moon can fucking shred and make it mean somthing.

Definitely. Buddy was great, insane chops and skill all around, but Moon and Bonham had such incredible musicality. Moon is one of my favorites, he's basically what got me into drumming originally.

punkrocker2o1 03-12-2006 09:51 PM

What Bonham can do with one pedal is simply amazing. Buddy does some fantastic solos but I don't know much about Keith...

rockindrummer 03-12-2006 09:52 PM

Ya that is totaly true. I'm all about the groove. If a drummer has an amazing groove with great time and feel, bonham, then I would rate them higher over someone who only has massive chops.

Groove > Chops

What Keith lacks in ability he makes up for with insanity.

Maggot Dream 03-12-2006 10:03 PM

I've always thought Moon's technical ability was somewhat underrated. I mean, watch the Kids Are Alright DVD, songs like Young Man Blues. Watch his right hand, he does this flick thing across the kit that you can barely see.

But yes, he was insane. Just listen to Cobwebs and Strange if you need proof of that.

poppinfresh 03-12-2006 10:08 PM

yes i agree, i heard some who song and first the fills were probably anything a drummer with no imagination could come up with and his beats were ok but his fills were over odne and his timing seemed kind of stupid. yeah i was kind of dissapointed.

-TGP- 03-12-2006 10:18 PM

Yay!
My bands going into a studio for free.
