Hey thread

23 minutes on my first taste of Dark Tranquility - what can I expect?
I'm not sure. I'm four tracks in and nothing has particularly struck me yet. It's not bad, just not world-slaying.

Having said that, this fourth one seems pretty good so far.

Burdcheese 02-23-2005 12:00 PM
Ah okay.

Anyway, more CDs can't be bad :) Can it?

My Amazon order finally arrived yesterday. I'm so poor now.
More CDs are always good :)
Probably going to try and get myself another one courtesy of ebay tonight.

What did you get again?

Bartender 02-23-2005 12:00 PM

Just a lot of CDs. Nothing tr00, though. Not even any metal really, with the exception of Watchtower.

superpeer 02-23-2005 12:05 PM

Anything I like?

Bartender 02-23-2005 12:10 PM

I don't know. Give me a little while, I'll write out a list.

You might like Watchtower. Really technical progressive metal. The only problem I can find with them is the vocalist; I love Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford (what I know, anyway), and I really enjoy 3 Inches of Blood's ridiculously high vocals, but Watchtower are rather like Spiral Architect in that they've managed to find a breed of vocalist who annoys the living hell out of me. Great music though, I'll upload a track or two in a bit if you like (once I'm finished with this Frank Klepacki).

superpeer 02-23-2005 12:15 PM

Sure, I don't usually like high vocals though, but there are a few exceptions.

Like Rhapsody, I borrowed Symphony of Enchanted lands the other day.

Bartender 02-23-2005 12:15 PM

Nice. Whose copy is it?

superpeer 02-23-2005 12:20 PM

The Mrs.

Bartender 02-23-2005 12:24 PM

And do you like it (beyond the cover art :))?

List;

Post-list writing addition - most of these don't even really belong in R&M :-/

Bob Dylan - The Times They Are A-Changin'
Bonnie "Prince" Billy - I See a Darkness
Clara Rockmore - The Art of the Theremin
Einstürzende Neubauten - Strategies Against Architecture
Gang of Four - Entertainment!
Jaco Pastorius - Jaco Pastorius
Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison
Magazine - The Correct Use of Soap
The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy and the Lash
Rob Dougan - Furious Angels
Saetia - A Retrospective
Serge Gainsbourg - Histoire De Melody Nelson
Solomon Burke - Don't Give Up On Me
U.N.K.L.E - Psyence Fiction
Watchtower - Control and Resistance
Yusef Lateef - The Blue Yusef Lateef

superpeer 02-23-2005 12:28 PM

Yes, it's pretty good. Emerald Sword is awesome, of course, and some other songs are very catchy as well. Sometimes the music is a bit overpowered by Keyboards and Symphony, though. There are a lot of moments you can't even hear the guitar.

It is also very nerdy, but it's fun to listen to, it's a faerie tale that they tell. Enjoyable, but not all songs are as good as Emerald Sword.

superpeer 02-23-2005 12:29 PM

More Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash, I see. Einstürzende Neubauten should be interesting as well, can't say I know a lot about the rest, though. :)

Well it'd be difficult to make a whole album full of Emerald Swords, I think.

Here's a Watchtower song, if you're interested;

And Joe (I think he's still here), here's that Klepacki album.

I hope I got those links the right way around.

Only one I've got is Furious Angels - great CD.

How I envy you being able to buy that many CDs at a time :(

Bartender 02-23-2005 12:35 PM

Well Amazon had a sale on. Bob Dylan, Neubauten, Gang of Four, Jaco Pastorius, Johnny Cash, Magazine and Rob Dougan were all £5.97 or less, I think. Magazine was actually only £3.33. Most of the others were £7.99, and the most expensive was £11.99, I think.

Anyway, that was 50% or so of January's food budget. And 50% of February's went on that Wildhearts vinyl I won, and now I'm debating bidding on this rare boxed set thing.. Stupid eBay.

munky_magik 02-23-2005 12:36 PM

But how can you blame ebay when it's so good to you?

Yeah, but it would have been great if they did.

Thanks, I'll download it now, listen later, first listen to my cd's.

Arucard 02-23-2005 12:37 PM

I need to get Symphony X - The Oddysey. Im obsses with Symphony X at the minute.

superpeer 02-23-2005 12:40 PM

Who wants to hear an Aborted song? :)

Jaco Pastorius - Jaco Pastorius - jazz fusion
Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison - Johnny Cash
Magazine - The Correct Use of Soap - post-punk

Saetia - A Retrospective - emo
Serge Gainsbourg - Histoire De Melody Nelson - sex
Solomon Burke - Don't Give Up On Me - soul
U.N.K.L.E - Psyence Fiction - DJ Shadow with guest vocalists
Watchtower - Control and Resistance - progressive metal
Yusef Lateef - The Blue Yusef Lateef - jazz/blues
Who wants to hear an Aborted song? :)
Well I already have one from you, but I'm more than happy to hear another.

Burdcheese 02-23-2005 12:41 PM

I'm liking this Dark Tranquility :smoke:

Bartender 02-23-2005 12:42 PM
But how can you blame ebay when it's so good to you?
Because it steals all my money :(

Do you buy things from eBay?

superpeer 02-23-2005 12:42 PM

Hehe, 'sex' and 'Johnny Cash' are cool genres. :)

I'll upload some then.

Bartender 02-23-2005 12:43 PM
I'm liking this Dark Tranquility :smoke:
Yeah, I just finished listening to it for the first time (the whole album I mean). It's good, but it didn't really strike me as anything really special. Some nice use of piano though, and there were a few tracks (mostly later on in the album) which I really liked.

bomber 02-23-2005 12:43 PM
Jaco Pastorius - Jaco Pastorius - jazz fusion
wow you've got style man. Jaco is one of the most influential players i know. :thumb:

I don't have especially discriminating tastes since I'm a Death Metal newb. Been getting into it the last few days.

I quite like Death (the band), but they're a bitch to look up :p

What do you mean?

Burdcheese 02-23-2005 12:56 PM

Imagine typing the word into a p2p program or google :)

superpeer 02-23-2005 12:58 PM

You could always search for albums. Or Songs. When I'm on metal-archives, I type in their former name; Mantas.

Burdcheese 02-23-2005 12:59 PM

Yeah - but I'm too stupid to think of that :(

edit - I'm actually using your ratemymusic list as my guide
