adb 02-26-2011 03:45 PM

so hey, can someone tell me what makes gorguts good? I will say they're good musicians, but their style of music isn't really musicial at all. I know you'll say THATS THE POINT or some bullshit

but I hear little that actually sounds good from the new song. They try so damn hard and just create a bunch of avant-garde bullshit that you guys eat up because they're socially accepted on the internet.

the point is you rip on me listening to tech death you know nothing about, then go ahead and say gorguts is awesome. You guys really think I'm the one who knows nothing about death metal?

adb 02-26-2011 05:45 PM

I like a handful of songs from obscura because they have actually hooks buried in the technical avant garde shit

witchxrapist 02-26-2011 05:45 PM

stop saying fucking hooks, nobody in their right mind listens to death metal for "hooks"
so hey, can someone tell me what makes gorguts good?
they're interesting as shit, and i love the abrasive dissonant feeling
I will say they're good musicians, but their style of music isn't really musicial at all.
do you know what the word musical even means?

also, "musicial," lol you mad?
but I hear little that actually sounds good from the new song. They try so damn hard and just create a bunch of avant-garde bullshit that you guys eat up because they're socially accepted on the internet.
i don't think you know what avant garde means

just got my first gorguts album (obscura) last week and though i know nothing about dm it didn't hold me all that much so :\. probably because i'm a dm noob.

personally if i'm going to listen to one of the big fucking names i'll go with onward to golgotha because i love how thick it is. anyone got similar recs to that? even if it's just that claustrophobic warpath feeling?

Band rules. We need a full length.

Destroy All Girls 02-27-2011 04:24 AM

if you weren't such a douchebag in putting forth your opinions this scoffing thing you hate so much wouldn't make for such a hostile arena

we all like different stuff most show a general respect for each others tastes, unless a n00b like you comes along and tries to make their reality everybody elses then you need to be whipped into shape, ridiculed into oblivion or ignored

get used to it

EdgeOfSanity 02-27-2011 09:50 AM

Whitechapel, Emmure, Disgorge, Defeated Sanity Tour 2011.

Txus 02-27-2011 09:59 AM

Sounds horrible.

Angmar 02-27-2011 03:35 PM

We don't hate on music because it's a certain genre, it just happens that a large part of mainstream tech death is cookie cutter drivel that lacks distinctive riffs and sound that make death metal as a whole appealing.

Gorguts not only has a sound of their own but it's a creepy as fuck sound that has lots of intricacies and amazing riffs. I'll admit I don't like all their songs but their good stuff is some of the best in death metal, and like many other complicated bands it's also an acquired taste.

publicastration 02-27-2011 03:37 PM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VICy-hWqzxs

this is one of the most interesting death metal songs I've heard.

Angmar 02-27-2011 03:40 PM

Gorguts isn't just music you can listen to on a shallow basis and immediately be impressed with the results, which is exactly what most tech death is. With Gorguts you have to actually listen carefully and hear what they're going for and then you realize that it's really cool and eerie, it's not just being impressed with how fast the guitars and fake triggered drums sound. This is why nobody takes Brents opinion on music seriously, he has no musical knowledge as to what makes music good for the most part, he just takes wanky shit at face value and refuses to branch out.

the fact that brent hears that Gorguts song as a "wall of overwhelming dissonance" or whatever he said is proof to this

Angmar 02-27-2011 04:03 PM

Someone should recommend me a new album to download, haven't gotten some good death metal in awhile.

Nepenthe 02-27-2011 04:05 PM

Angmar 02-27-2011 04:06 PM

Jake actually told me about them a few days ago and I got it, really good stuff.

I'm looking for more straight DM anyway.

mutant supremacy
primitive graven image
stargazer

@steve

Angmar 02-27-2011 04:11 PM

Thanks bro I'll check em out, you're usually pretty reliable ;)

Nepenthe 02-27-2011 04:12 PM

mutant supremacy is some croosh old school shit (they're a new band tho)
primitive graven image is like blackened death, kinda progressive
stargazer is progressive death stuff

Deth 02-27-2011 04:28 PM

get graveyard's new album steve

DBlitz 02-27-2011 05:09 PM

stargazer are pretty hit and miss
I like a few songs on Obscura, I've said this many times.
have you listened to any of their other albums? y/n
http://www.baringteethmetal.com/
that's actually pretty cool. looking forward to the album now.

adb 02-27-2011 05:13 PM

I've heard songs from other albums but didn't like

adbforever 02-27-2011 09:33 PM

all I have to say is

you guys, you really need to understand how hilariously hypocritical you are. You rip my taste in music by attaching a negative connotation to "technical" when thats not in any way why I listen to it

then you go and say gorguts are awesome, the new song is great etc. It's a joke, a literal joke how you guys attach yourselves to bands that are socially accepted on the internet, and hate "tech death wank". Gorguts is absolutely tech death wank

and before you say it

sweeping isn't the only fucking way to discern technicality, just because they don't sweep does not mean Gorguts isn't wank.

I'll admit I'm close minded when it comes to music, but you guys need to as well. We have totally different tastes, the difference being I don't give a shit how elite or how much e-cred they get.

I get your explanations on WHY you like gorguts, but then be goddamn consistent. Don't say you like it for a similar reason why you bash the music I listen to.

Especially steve, you have no goddamn clue and think all tech death sounds like brain drill or something

rasputin 02-27-2011 09:35 PM

there isn't any hypocrisy at all

gorguts doesnt sound like most tech-death, and never has. have you even heard erosion of sanity or considered dead? they sound nothing like neuraxis or fleshgod or whatever other bullshit dm you praise

adbforever 02-27-2011 09:36 PM

dude, I'm referring to the new gorguts song in particular. thats where the whole argument started
they sound nothing like neuraxis or fleshgod or whatever other bullshit dm you praise
perfect case of you guys being ignorant and writing off tech death. Neuraxis and fleshgod sound nothing a fucking like

neuraxis old stuff in particular is a great example of tech death that is literally riffs. No "wank" anywhere

even their new stuff has minimal wank, they're the kings of the groovy riff. But they have no mx cred so nobody cares.

P13 02-27-2011 09:39 PM

of the gorguts I've listened to it sounds like experimental jazz with double bass and distortion

rasputin 02-27-2011 09:41 PM
dude, I'm referring to the new gorguts song in particular. thats where the whole argument started
read carefully - gorguts doesnt sound like most tech-death, and never has. i believe this statement includes the new song. gorguts sounds like gorguts.
perfect case of you guys being ignorant and writing off tech death. Neuraxis and fleshgod sound nothing a fucking like
yes, except we're writing off the genre for the shitty bands in it. i dont need to know that those two bands are nothing alike, in fact i wasnt even implying that they sounded alike so this is just you picking out an irrelevant thing i said in order to make your baseless argument seem stronger.

Tyler 02-27-2011 09:43 PM
perfect case of you guys being ignorant and writing off tech death. Neuraxis and fleshgod sound nothing a fucking like
Gonna have to agree with this. I used to like Neuraxis to a point, but always thought they felt a little soulless. I'm curious about their new one though, but it's the idea of it being 'soulless' that kills a lot of tech death for me. I realize it's impossible to quantify or rationalize, but it's a feeling I get from bands. I feel like Gorguts, while technical yeah, have a bit of emotion or angst to them that some tech death doesn't.

xMalcolmXx 02-27-2011 09:44 PM

adb you're right that there is a general opinion on music here and sometimes it seems people only like something because people talk about it on here (idk how true that really is across the board, but i know what you mean), but saying gorguts is only cool on the internet is dumb as fuck

Angmar 02-27-2011 09:46 PM

People generally agreeing on a lot of bands isn't limited to this one forum, lots of metalheads all tend to like similar bands because a ton of people tend to lean towards old school and traditional death metal in general. You will find people who might listen to Autopsy and Deeds of Flesh but it's way less likely than to find someone who enjoys bands in the vein of Death and Immolation (like most people here). It's not because we're sheep but it's because those bands all have a style that appeals to the taste of a lot of metalheads while stuff like teach death tends to appeal to those who maybe aren't as rooted in older metal.

adbforever 02-27-2011 09:47 PM
but saying gorguts is only cool on the internet is dumb as fuck
they are dude. I've never been to a dm or metal forum where they are disliked

I've lurked around and posted in many

especially SMN, which is like the main dm forum I've been around

they're adored there

rasputin 02-27-2011 09:48 PM

adb: discerning other people's taste through internet forums since 2009

Tyler 02-27-2011 09:49 PM

they're almost universally adored because they're really good and because they're one of the most unique and influential death metal bands of all time. assuming that because they're popular on the internet they're not popular outside of it isn't really fair.
