The Cynic 04-15-2006 02:41 PM

CAn anyone reccomend me some Steve Vai?

Riva 04-15-2006 07:24 PM

I quite like Passion And Warfare.

classicrockman 04-15-2006 07:29 PM

Riva is right. If you're gonna get a Steve Vai album, 'Passion and Warfare' is the one.

gohugatree 04-15-2006 07:30 PM

I've really gotten into blues and jazz, what are some albums I should get.

classicrockman 04-15-2006 07:33 PM

Yeah, stuff like S.R.V. and B.B. King.

Riva 04-15-2006 08:28 PM

Try out Buddy Guy - Damn Right I've Got The Blues.

gmoneyguy 04-15-2006 08:47 PM

I would also try some Robert Johnson.

gohugatree 04-15-2006 08:50 PM

Thanks for the suggestions.

Shattered_Future 04-15-2006 09:02 PM

You could also try some Gauntlet, if you're looking for something a bit heavier...it's rather heavy, but it's still very blusey.

classicrockman 04-15-2006 10:26 PM

Check out these artists:

Eric Clapton
Robert Cray
Muddy Waters
Gary Moore

gmoneyguy 04-15-2006 10:47 PM

Come to think of it, he should pick up the Crossroads Guitar Festival DVD.

Jetpack 04-16-2006 12:33 PM

Hey, got a project and im having to make a mix cd of the music i've studied over the semester.

I have to use different genres, and i dont want to use the songs that we've studied in class, so I'm going to make a list of genres that I need to use, and you guys can give me your fave songs for the different genres!! Thanks if you guys feel like doing this, I have most of it covered but there's some types of music that i'm no expert on. I'll list most of the genres anyways cause i might change my mind if you bring up a good song.

To Add to this, in some of the genres I already know the artists, but why don't you guys suggest some good songs that I might use for them!

Genres:

Psychedelic Rock
Funk
Soul
Glam
Disco
Power pop
Early 70s Rock
Folk although im definitely choosing neil young so just give me a song
Early Punk
Metal (all subgenres too i guess lol)

As far as the bands i have going right now:

NoFX, Nirvana, The Beatles, Bob Marley, In Flames, gimme some songs that really represent these groups... their whole sound.

THanks if you guys feel like doing this.

Jacaranda 04-16-2006 12:45 PM

Psychedelic Rock:

Big Star - September Gurls, Cheap Trick - I Want You to Want Me,
Early Punk:

I'm taking Early 70s Rock literally....
Rolling Stones - Bitch or Brown Sugar, The Guess Who - American Women, Led Zeppelin - Immigrant Song or Rock and Roll, Velvet Underground - Rock & Roll, David Bowie - Changes, The Who - Baba O'Riley, Aerosmith - Dream On

The Doors- Soul Kitchen
Jefferson Airplane- White Rabbit

Psychedelic Rock might be my favorite genre and I could give you hundreds of other songs, but that should get you started.

Funk

Funkadelic- Maggot Brain
Parliament- Give Up the Funk
Rick James- Superfreak
Curtis Mayfield- Superfly
Car Wash and Brick House (no idea who did these songs)
Red Hot Chili Peppers- Higher Ground (or the Stevie Wonder orginal)

Wilson Pickett- In the Midnight Hour
The Temptations- Ain't Too Proud to Beg
Sam and Dave- Hold On! I'm Comin'
Otis Redding- That's How Strong My Love Is

I might add some more later. But I'm tired of typing now. Hope that helps.

NicetoKnowyou 04-18-2006 08:25 AM

What Mars Volta album should i start off with?

joe_fresh 04-19-2006 02:58 AM

I'd go for the first one, De-Loused in the Crematorium. I'd say I prefer it to Frances the Mute in some ways.

3rdplanet 04-20-2006 05:44 PM

I've currently been digging Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Kayo Dot, Gong and in a similar vein, though off at a bit of a tangent, Screaming Headless Torsos. Does anyone have some more recommendations for cool Avant Garde groups?
What Mars Volta album should i start off with?
I'd say go with De-Loused in the Comatorium.

I thought Mago de Oz were power metal?
I thought Mago de Oz were power metal?
They are.

Riva 04-20-2006 06:10 PM

Folk and Power are often very closely linked. Look at some of Galloglass' songs on their debut album Legends From Now And Nevermore.
Folk and Power are often very closely linked. Look at some of Galloglass' songs on their debut album Legends From Now And Nevermore.
I thought Folk was more closely tied with Viking metal? Those are the two I have trouble deciphering from each other, anyway.

Riva 04-20-2006 06:17 PM

Power/Viking/Folk/Black all tend to get blurry. There's the very genre specific bands that are easy to tell apart, then you have acts like Falkenbach, Mithotyn, Galloglass and Melechesh.
Irish folk is the only folk worth a folk in this town.
Enya for the loss...

I've never really confused Black Metal with Power Metal...Darkthrone and DragonForce sound pretty different to me. But I see where you're coming from.

Riva 04-20-2006 06:32 PM

Well, as I said there are the genre specific bands. Dragonforce and Darkthrone are both the archetypes of their genres.

Can anyone Reccommend me some blues of all types? Thanks.

They have some PM touches in there, but they aren't entirely PM at all. They have more Irish/Folk resemblance than anything else. Which album do you have? Gaia?

Gaia and Jesu. I see a lot more power metal in them than folk, and I see little to no Irish folk in it, considering they're Spanish...

Oh, I need to send you some more then. You need Blefast and Finisterra to really see what I'm talking about. :p

Alright, thanks! Although you really won't be able to send me anything until the end of May. :( I'm at school and they block YSI, AIM, megaupload, etc.
