So I've really been getting into stuff like early Pink Floyd, Rubber Soul/Revolver Beatles, the Velvet Underground, and electric Bob Dylan lately. I was wondering if there were any other bands with that similar 1965-1970 "vibe" that these bands have.

I hope you understand the style I'm going for- kind of Psychedelic, kind of Bluesy, weird lyrics, not necessarily great vocals, but something that makes it instantly recognizable. I was just wondering if there's anything similar to that kind of sound. I know it sounds kind of picky, but I've really been digging that kind of not over-produced, raw bluesy/psychedelic/almost progressive stuff lately, and was hoping I could delve deeper into that kind of a subgenre of rock.

The Who - Who's Next
Led Zeppelin - IV
Deep Purple - Machine Head
Slayer - Reign In Blood
Children of Bodom - Follow the Reaper

My top recommendations would have to be:

Savatage
Anthrax
Candlemass
Blind Guardian
Dungeon

Also, later tonight I'm putting up a thread on Mercyful Fate which I'm taking this time right now to whore to anyone who appreciates classic metal bands.

CantBuyAThrill 10-28-2005 08:27 PM
Erm, maybe Tom Waits? He's a singer/songwriter from the '80s, but I think he fits what you're talking about quite well. Get Rain Dogs if you're looking for an album recommendation. Maybe The Moody Blues as well, although they're more proto-prog (to use my new favourite genre). Other than that, I'd suggest

King Crimson
Television
Yeah, I have "In the Court of the Crimson King" and I totally love that album. I haven't heard Television yet, I'll check them out. I'll also be sure to check out some Mr. Bungle and some Tom Waits. I've listened to quite a bit of the Moody Blues, and I like 'em when I can get past the talking thing they do on alot of the songs, otherwise I really dig them.

Any other suggestions?

dUSK 10-29-2005 09:31 AM

Can someone recommend me a couple of good songs that would fit a depressed mood (emo lolzorz)? Similiar to To Bid You Farewell would be nice.

And while I'm at it, some 80's sounding Power Ballads, similiar to Whitesnake - Here I Go Again On My Own.

Thanks.

Add to that - Autumn Leaves, Gates of Ishtar, Dissection, Eucharist, Skyfire, some Hypocrisy, and maybe Melechesh. Note the emphasis on Eucharist.

Riva 10-31-2005 09:28 PM

Melechesh is more folk-black metal, but it should be palatable to those of melodic death tastes.

Stoic 11-01-2005 10:24 AM

you mean folk in the eastern way, right? Great band :)

Dude3 11-01-2005 02:33 PM

what would you guys say is the best Norma Jean album?

.Realm.of.Chaos. 11-01-2005 02:34 PM

Everyone listen to Between the Buried and Me
Awesome band, seeing em in 2 weeks :)

Dude3 11-01-2005 05:49 PM

Also, I've been meaning to check out some OLD Underoath. From what my friends tell me, their old stuff is amazing, and much heavier.

How about some song suggestions of that stuff?

Check out the album "Act of Depression". Two of the songs are over ten minutes long while the rest are all over five minutes.
