Actually they have some cool songs, but I just feel they're really overrated and it's funny to tell you they suck because you love them so much. <3 |
while Kråkesølv, The Gloria Record, Pop Uknown and so on have pushed emo into its outer poppy catchy limit, Antioch Arrow pretty much blew up every border there ever could be. first with their chaotic art bursts, then with their claustrophobic intensity. amazing band.
|
Who cares? They're pretty mediocre save a few songs.
|
the gloria record sucks and no one has heard/cares about those other two dumb obscure bands
|
I love how this kid and that one other douche think that saying something isn't popular enough makes it bad.

my point is that everyone should recognise their influence and originality, even if they don't like the music. |
I def recognize that shi.

loling so hard |
"Hai, i dont no n e thing bout emo, but dat list u guyz posted back in 2004 iz wrong."
But don't worry, this guy (Xomblies) has played THOUSANDS of shows, so he definitely knows what he's talking about. |
what the hell is the matter with you?
|
Hey Xomblies, how is Chiodos a screamo band?
|
how is it not?
|
they don't play screamo music. thus it's not screamo. "screamo bands" refer to bands that play screamo music.
|
screamo music?
Edit: Don't even bother with an explanation... I would rather enjoy the other threads within this site... |
screamo is a genre of music. it's a highly ambiguous genre though, since it can be attributed to nearly all emo bands that utilize screaming as their main style of vocals.
but usually it's attributed to a number of distinctive sounds, including the California bands who were highly influenced by some of the more aggressive stuff in the emo/hardcore scene at the time (Heroin, Angel Hair, Antioch Arrow and so on). bands like Honeywell, Reach Out and Mohinder are all a part of this. nowadays it's more commonly used to refer to bands who play a sort of epic and progressive sound with dual twinkly guitars and so on, all heavily influenced by a Japanese screamo band called Envy who are somewhat responsible for making this popular. at the very least it's dynamic and somewhat artsy. bands who practice this soulful and highly emotive sound often have ridiculous band names like I Would Set Myself on Fire For You and iwrotehaikusaboutcannibalisminyouryearbook, all in the good trend of I Hate Myself's stabbing at the then (90s) already stupid direction bands were taking with completely extraneous song titles and band names. anyway there are a bunch of screamo sounds, and a million screamo bands. Chiodos however, is not one of them. |
screamo music?
how is it not?
They're post-hardcore, along with DGD, fyi. |
that's a good start but that really doesn't make it any clearer. is there something these bands are doing that chiodos isn't?
and if chiodos isn't screamo, then what would you classify it as? i can't help but feel that maybe the classification of a band's genre is subjective to the artist making it? i'm not trying to start a fight with anyone or second guess what people have listed on the site, hence why i'm ASKING questions. To me the bands i listed classify as screamo and i just want to know why people here would think otherwise... and it's obviously a vast amount of people. mute print: i would expect a moderator of a site as popular as this one to be a little more diplomatic. I in no way said "hey you guys this list is wrong" and in questioning it i was hoping on finding some clarification. and so far, one user has been nice enough to even attempt to clarify rather than start talking trash. I'm sure there's a reason for all the hostility here but i can assure you i'm not just some dumb kid who doesn't know his d!ck from his own butthole so please, lighten up, i love music too :) |
uh first off they're on Warner Bros so they're not in the punk milieu. second off their music doesn't sound anything remotely like any screamo band ever.
here are two screamo bands, each playing their distinct version of the screamo sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4NuXjkyfjE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnR5hP594Jo then go listen to Chiodos and tell me how they could ever have anything to do with screamo. as for what I'd classify them as I'd say alternative-tinged modern poppy metalcore, kind of like Aiden. |
i do hear a difference, but when you make a statement about how the label a band is signed to changes their genre, is quite the lack of objectivity.
thanks for all the music christsimpson, i'll be picking up some envy in the near future amongst a few others listed here. I can't say i agree with everything you're saying, but i respect it |
punk isn't just music dude. it's ethics and politics as well. signing to a major label is inherently not punk. it just goes against everything that punk's supposed to be. at least in my book. major label bands playing stadiums and selling hundreds of thousands of DRM-infected CDs are not punk. it's that simple really.
while a band may play punk rock music, this doesn't necessary make the band punk rock, if you catch my drift. |
i get what you're saying now
Edit: ps unless equal vision is a sub of warner, then they're not on warner... or if there is some news i haven't heard of yet... |
i'm pretty sure putting a band in a category based on record label is more objective than classifying them based on noise
even though that's kind of stupid oh and by the way Xomblies is the best new poster |
why would you even want to listen to screamo
save for a few bands the genre is pretty lame just go with Descendents - Milo Goes To College |

after ignoring the new Teenage Cool Kids for like 8 months I regret it because it's really good.
|
yep, one of the few punk bands who gave a fuque about sonic quality... ever heard of propaghandi?
edit: yes, that album is really good, and the descendents are one of the few bands who care for sonic quality ;) |
