I'm waiting for chopped and screwed to catch on. I realize the forums are just catching on to rap and are in the 'intellectual' phase of it, but ****, once they get Slim Thug's Already Platinum, that blows everything out of the water.

(I still love Aesop Rock and Del and Jedi and Binary Star and Talib and all that, but mang, I love being hit by the mollasses [sp?])
Yeah.......okay man

40 oz 2 freedom 01-11-2006 07:28 AM
Not just Houston rappers do it though. Three 6 Mafia did one, Paul Wall, etc. And on that note, Paul Wall chopped and screwed a Transplants album.
Paul Wall is from Houston

Hip White Guy 01-11-2006 09:02 AM

You guys suck at freestyling. My best work was as the alien on b9, but here goes...

Ready for war, bacon bits scatterd about
Mods runnin round all over, Nick gets caught cause he's stout
Layin down the smack with the hardcore pride
Hold it down, set if off, protest and survive
Now the grease has come around
And you can't eat this type
Your punk ass is going down
BACON BITS CREW FOR LIFE

UH

Unban Me Says Cameo 01-11-2006 09:05 AM
As in Mike Jones and the other Houston rappers?
To an extent, but you shouldn't judge it based on Mike Jones. He really isn't that good. Already Platinum (Slim Thug) is good and if you can download lots of DJ Screw's records, it's a better representation. But yes, you can think of it as Khanate or Sunn O))) meets the dirty souf.

Unban Me Says Cameo 01-11-2006 09:08 AM
Being from TX, everyone in our hc scene loves that chopped and screwed bullshit, but I honestly can't stand it. I think it all sucks. I'll stick to the "intellectual" stuff, thank you.

Oh, and I'm no where near barely catching on to hip-hop, and the only good rap was old school gangsta rap.

Death row is the label that paays me.
I love gangsta rap. NWA and Wu Tang are among my favourites in rap and Wu Tang is a favourite of all time. But this is what's wrong with 'smart' rap. You get people who feel superiour simply because they're artist of choice has 'meaning'. They can't ever just get down to something because dang yo, that's misogynistic right there, etc. I ain't saying you're like that, but the thank you at the end surely gives off that air.

And yeah, I realize people here listen to Three Six, before you bust my balls about actually liking rap that isn't all about intellectual lyricism.

Hip White Guy 01-11-2006 09:13 AM

I really don't see the appeal of mainstream rap. Most of it has shitty flow, shitty lyrics, and shitty beats. Recently, mostly because of Pat, I've been getting into more rap. GZA, Jedi Mind Tricks, Wu-Tang, Talib Kweli, etc. Also, listening to more Del and Technique. Shit r00lz.

TakeWarning 01-11-2006 09:24 AM

My personal favourite is Jedi Mind Tricks.

I have to go buy the rest of my books and then pay my tuition. It's going to hurt.

Malice 01-11-2006 09:29 AM

I'll assume you're talking about school, so I'll also comment and say I don't have my books nor my uniform.

I go back to school on the 31st :upset:

TakeWarning 01-11-2006 09:30 AM

I think I might force my parents into paying for my university fees.

Malice 01-11-2006 09:30 AM

My parents pay for everything when it comes to my schooling.

TakeWarning 01-11-2006 09:31 AM

I don't go back until 2nd February, still got three weeks left.

Malice 01-11-2006 09:34 AM

Lucky bastard. Oh well, I'm just excited because I'm doing the subject I enjoy and I get to see my friends again.

Hey, aren't you on my MSN?

EDIT: 400th post

ThePassionofTheKaseyPart2 01-11-2006 09:34 AM

My parents are paying for all my housing minus 1000 dollars that I have to pay them, scholarships are paying for tuition and books. It's just that the scholarships came as just checks to me, so right now they're in my bank account and it feels like it's my money.

It's... Kieran, right?

TakeWarning 01-11-2006 09:36 AM

Yes it is.

Mal right?

Malice 01-11-2006 09:39 AM

Correct.

Why up so late? Erm.. early?

TakeWarning 01-11-2006 09:40 AM

You're up late, isn't it 1:41 over there?

It's only 11:41 over here.

Malice 01-11-2006 10:08 AM

Ahh right. Time difference *taps nose*

It's 3:10am here and I'm about to hit the sack.

G'night buddy :-*

TakeWarning 01-11-2006 10:12 AM

Most mainstream rap is bad. However, don't discredit some artists because 50 cent happens to be at the forefront. Rap is one of the few genres where some good things actually make it to the top. And I know I'll get even more **** for it, but ****, Lil Jon makes you wanna dance.

Have you heard Black Star yet? It's Mos Def + Talib. You should probably check out Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. They're an old rap group but they're fun and helped pave the way for conciousness in rap. They were one of the first groups to ever describe street life in 'The Message', a staple in rap music.

Johnny tried to send me an album but it wouldn't work for some reason. I'm not huge into Mos Def, but Talib Kweli is great.

I think White Lines is probably the best song ever recorded.

Unban Me Says Cameo 01-11-2006 10:21 AM

Ah good, you know the FF. Yeah, you know, Mos Def and De La Soul never did anything for me, but Black Star is pretty good. Hi Tek is a good producer.

The only other recc I could come up with that you may or may not have been able to find on your own through reading would be Diggin in the Crates.

Hip White Guy 01-11-2006 10:33 AM

I gotta go to school now, I'll check em out later.
Could somebody tell me if Set Your Goals always sounded like Rufio with breakdowns? The crap on purevolume is lame sauce.
Not really. They're alot heavier than Rufio. Faster too.
Anyway, great band, you should check them out.

TakeWarning 01-11-2006 11:51 AM

I never really liked Rufio, they always came off as kind of whiney. I see what you mean about some similarities though.

Anyway I'm off to bed. Peace out.

Unban Me Says Cameo 01-11-2006 12:32 PM

Does Bum Ruckus have ex rufio?
