Gil is technically proficient too, about equally I'd say. Less precise more fluid.
Eh, I am not too familiar with Gil's work, and I have yet to listen to the new song that they have released, so I really could not tell you what I think of him.

Chris Pennie is just...Chris Pennie. :p

Thor 10-16-2007 03:53 PM

Pennie was great, though some of his solo videos are kind of obnoxious. He's really talented, but they just didn't appeal to me at all.

RouteOne 10-16-2007 03:54 PM

Yeah just listened to Lurch. Nothing interesting. They need a new approach to their music.

Thor 10-16-2007 03:57 PM

It'd be awesome if they made more stuff like "Phone Home".

Tyler 10-16-2007 03:58 PM

Have you guys heard Black Bubble Gum? It's pretty cool. Definitely the most straight-forward song they've ever done but the hooks are pretty solid.
Nothing else to it. No Eleventeen, they aren't "boring drawn out "dissodant" music", considering they were one of the first bands to play their style of music.
didn't you join after my name change?

and while we're on the topic of DEP apparently being good, IT DWELLS INSIDE IS SICK BROS
Pennie was great, though some of his solo videos are kind of obnoxious. He's really talented, but they just didn't appeal to me at all.
Well, solo drums are not always the most entertaining solos to watch. :)

A Dead Modernist 10-16-2007 04:35 PM
well, Chris did write a huge chunk of the material. Gil is doing find as a drummer but they clearly need Chris to write. I think Chris had a hand in at least some of the album though so we'll see.
This exactly. I also think Gil is the better drummer even though Chris suits the band much better, musically.
Greg is a decent vocalist but his vocals are way too apparent in the mix. Dmitri's were just another layer as opposed to him being a 'lead vocalist'.
i agree wit this hur. imo letting dimitri and pennie go were pretty bad decisions

Tyler 10-16-2007 05:00 PM

well it's not like they let them. Dmitri went to start a pretty solid graphic design career and Pennie is playing for Coheed, ie: he can play while he naps on stage and get paid lots for it.

bleep_bloop 10-16-2007 05:03 PM

yeah, i mean going on playing under the same name without dimitri was idk a bad decision, same for pennie; they were both pretty integral to dep's sound and their replacements suck in comparison

i am the robots 10-16-2007 05:36 PM

dmetri sucked, tbh.

Prog Metalcore/Death Metal

i am the robots 10-16-2007 05:42 PM

they're decent, pretty standard tragic hero material

encmetalhead 10-16-2007 05:46 PM

yeah but i feel they have more protentail then the lighter bands from TH even though bands like Yearling and Your Naime IN Vain will get a major deal before any of the harder bands do

This because it is true, unless they heard Miss Machine first and never experienced Calculating Infinity. Then, the listener sucks, period.

havent heard that
This. Everything after Calculating Infinity sucked.

This because Pennie was an absolute beast of a drummer.
Give credit to Benoit as well.

MM is incredible too because of how progessive it is. If they make an even more progressive from what MM was, I can see them possibly topping CI.

Eliminator 10-16-2007 08:39 PM

CI sucks

Pete 10-17-2007 01:01 PM

I have never gotten into "Miss Machine", but the earlier sh!t is solid (IMO) and I really like their Patton EP. They don't interest me as much as they once did. But they're awesome live.

LifeInABox 10-17-2007 01:06 PM

CI = MM > Irony.

Pete 10-17-2007 01:08 PM

"Under the Running Board" is solid stuff as well, "The Mullet Burden" is what got me into DEP to begin with.

Tyler 10-17-2007 01:09 PM

Irony would top both if it wasn't just an EP.

Come To Daddy kills it (in a good way). I mean yeah it's boring, but the fact that they actually managed to take that song and record it is unbelievable, especially in the drums.

CI = MM = Ir

for me.

then Ir > Running Board > DEP > Nora split

LifeInABox 10-17-2007 01:11 PM
"Under the Running Board" is solid stuff as well, "The Mullet Burden" is what got me into DEP to begin with.
I'm waitinf for my copy of that to come in. If IIADS wasn't an EP, obviously it would top both, but it is just an EP.

I havn't gotten their s/t yet. I'll order it.

Tyler 10-17-2007 01:12 PM

Mullet Burden rules, yeah.

Anyone seen the video of them performing it with Dmitri, where he starts whipping chairs at people?

Pete 10-17-2007 01:16 PM

no, i haven't seen that, and going through my mp3 folder now, i have lost my dillinger ST album =/

edit: and listening to Under the Running Board, this is really good, i dont get why people badmouth DEP

LifeInABox 10-17-2007 01:19 PM

Because they are ignorant and want to sound contraversial :(

When Good Dogs Do Bad This is sooo incredibly awesome.

Alright, Coke. I have to agree.

CI = MM = IIADS

Tyler 10-17-2007 01:23 PM

I could see why people hate on DEP, they are kind of same-y after CI. I know that's ironic because their goal is to be as dissonant and [whatever] as possible, but even that blurs together.

That being said, I like it that way.

Pete 10-17-2007 01:46 PM

They're more dissonant an incoherent on "Miss Machine", I think, and just more intricate and technical on the other stuff. There's a difference.

"When Good Dogs do Bad Things" is an awesome, awesome song, but I don't really consider Irony to be a 'real' DEP release, more like a co-release, because Patton has as much to do with it himself as DEP does. I think.

Tyler 10-17-2007 01:47 PM

Agreed on both points.

People fault MM way too much because it has some hooks. Honestly, to make hooks work in the context of what they're playing is a pretty incredible feat.

I will never stop giving credit to the Crippler.

There's a video on youtube of Greg running on top of people's heads during the opening of Sugar Coated Sour.
