for one thing, it's not related to english at all (even languages like russian, hindi, farsi, and greek are distantly related to english), so the grammar is completely different.

for example, in english roots are full words, and we generally alter them by adding suffixes - for example, the plural of "dog" is "dogs", and the past tense of "walk" is "walked".

in arabic, a root is (generally) three consonants, and you change the vowels within and add various suffixes and prefixes to change the meaning. for example, the root "k t b" indicates writing, and...

"kitaab" is book, while books is "kutub". library is "maktaba".
"yaktubu" is he writes in the present tense, while he wrote in the past tense is "kataba"

and thats just getting started
sounds like im going to have a hard time

Surely there are rules that can serve at least as guidelines for adding the prefixes, suffixes, and vowels to the root, though?

illmitch 07-28-2010 04:52 PM

verbs are for the most part entirely regular (when one of the consonants is a w or y, the forms change, but these are predictable), but the rules governing them are very complex

some nouns are predictable (e.g. nouns of the form maCCaC, where C stands for one of the consonants in the root, almost always turn to maCaaCiC in the plural), and there is a set number of forms that the plural takes, but often which form a given noun takes is completely random

Deth 07-28-2010 04:55 PM

how hard is it for people who speak arabic to learn english

because that language sounds as dumb as they are

illmitch 07-28-2010 04:58 PM
