Yes, a very cool psychedelic band from Japan.

Do you have any of their albums? I only have half of Electric Heavyland and I enjoy the half that I have I just can't find anyone that has any of their material. :-/
I've got a bootleg of a show they did, I can upload it if anybody wants it.

Broken Arrow 08-09-2005 08:44 PM
Pigpen never really had much of a stage presence, I do not see why you guys are saying he did.

Unless standing around (He even rarely sat down to play keyboard) and occasionally singing while having that odd original look that he had is "stage presence".
Phil Lesh even says how in the early days Pig was their frontman and their shows usually included a rant by him that usually got the crowd going.

Badmoon 08-09-2005 08:46 PM

I've seen clips from the 60's and such (I hear one was from Ken Kesey's movie, I'm not sure though) and Pigpen seemed to be like a John Popper, but possibly a little less into the song.

The Grateful Dead as a whole never really gave you much during a show other than music, which was obviously satisfing to many.
Phil Lesh even says how in the early days Pig was their frontman and their shows usually included a rant by him that usually got the crowd going.
You could listen to his and Jerry's rants on Mother Mcree's Uptown Jug Champs; I wouldn't say they were worthy of getting them labeled as great showman, while not mentioning their music ability.

Broken Arrow 08-09-2005 08:48 PM

I have a 33 min version of "Turn On Your Lovelight" that the Grateful Dead did with the Allmans in 1970 and you should hear the rant Pig goes on.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 08-09-2005 08:48 PM

*raises hand*

Thanks in advance. :)

Walrus Gumboot 08-09-2005 08:48 PM
Well, I've never seen any videos, and I'm not aware of any videos of the Dead from when he was alive. So I'm just going off everything I read in Searching for the Sound, and Phil certainly makes him out to be quite the showman.
I love how every time he talks about him singing he always remarks on the sleaziness of his vocals

BTW The Nashville Sessions are up in Alt Indie - One page back

Badmoon 08-09-2005 08:51 PM
Phil Lesh even says how in the early days Pig was their frontman
And Rock Scully says otherwise, though early on he certainly was looked at as the frontman. You want me to admitt you're right? It's opinion.
BTW The Nashville Sessions are up in Alt Indie - One page back
Pretty good album, I got it on used about half a year ago. The collaborations with John Bell and Taj Mahal are the best.

Neil Young- Greendale (2003)
hxxp://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=30V831CX0EW891NPHRYOHQN799

This is sort of a concept album, so it would be best if you knew that it depicts the story of the Green family in Greendale, California, a fictional family and a fictional town. Characters include Grandma, Grandpa, Edith, Earl (parents) Sun and Jed (kids)
Everything is peaceful until Jed panics and kills a cop (Carmichael), with a dashboard full of cocaine and a trunk full of weed when all hell breaks loose and the media ensues to harass the family (It is hard to tell from listening and or watching to pick up the fact that Jet was supplying a woman named Lenore with cocaine, who was supplying Carmichael)
It's really a statement about post-9/11 America, topics cover Traditional values, the media, drugs, the environment, the current white house administration, growing up, and the environment
I really like it

We don't discuss Queen much do we?

I'm listening to Don't Stop Me Now.

It's cool how it starts out all slow then just speeds up.

I love how it drifts back in forth between "super sonic woman" and "supersonic man"

I think Queen may have had a harder time if they started out these days, with all the homophobia and such. Maybe not though

Yea , my mom listened to it growin up and i really thought it was too soft for me , but one of my friends startin likin him and i sit down and lisitened , and it aint that bad.

Illmatic 08-10-2005 05:04 PM

Not a very big fan of Elton John, to be quite honest :-\ but has anyone seen William Shatner's "performance" of "Rocket Man"? My friend showed it to me last year and it was funny as hell.

I do like Queen, though. No one knows how to combine camp with a good hook like they do.

I have never heard him sing before.

Illmatic 08-10-2005 05:37 PM
I have never heard him sing before.
He doesn't sing, per se (well, maybe he does now, but he didn't in the 60's), he does spoken-word renditions of songs ("Mr. Tambourine Man", "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds", and "Rocket Man" being the most famous examples) that are so jaw-droppingly awful that they are actually hilarious. One of my good friends introduced me to them last year and I think they're so bad they're good.

Queen were pop geniuses, I think.
