I've got all three of his solo albums, and my favorite is Radio KAOS, but I would much rather just listen to a Floyd album.
David Gilmour solo > Roger Waters solo I'm looking forward to Rick Wright's new album. |
Gilmour just seems to me to be more generic rock.
I could pick up pretty much any Waters' solo track out of a line up as distinctly his, whereas I'd have a hard time placing Gilmour's tracks. For example, Home from Radio KAOS is very dissimilar to anything floyd or Waters have recorded before or since, but On An Island could be just any rock ballad. I haven't heard everything by Gilmour, but from what I have heard (On An Island/About Face/Some of the self titled) Its pretty normal rock music. Not bad, but not as distinctive or interesting as Waters' work. |
I'm kind of boring when it comes to rock music, I guess. I'll take a pretty, bluesy guitar riff over a sound sample anyday.
I guess thats a big reason why I've always liked David more than Roger, even though I play bass. He just seems to be a lot more organic with his music. That, and he probably has one of the coolest rock singing voices ever. |
Yeah Dave does have a great voice for rock.
Dave > Rick > Roger > Syd |
In terms of talent on that list I would agree. But I prefer listening to Roger, he put across emotion so well even if he isnt technically as good as David or Rick.
|
Yeah emotion is definitely Waters' strength. He delivers it in Mother really well.
|
Roger's singing makes Hey You a much better song than I think it would be otherwise.
|

This is why I love him. The emotion pours out of him with every song. I'd recommend Amused to Death if you were getting a solo album. Speaking of the man himself - I saw him last night :smoke: Fantastic quite frankly. The atmosphere was quite relaxed in the first half, but once the second set began (DSOTM) the place just went all a buzz! The frenzied audience were cheering and singing in unison, and people who were passively listening earlier were rearing up and going all girly. I also detected a hint of the wacky substance in the air during the introduction to Time, which was a flagrant (and fragrant) reminder to all that we were experiencing one of the most universally loved albums of all time in all it's live splendour (albeit, with only one/fourth of it's original creators). While the flow of the performance stilted a little now and then, with the many video interludes slowing the pace during songs, the new arrangemants and re-imagining of the past classics (particularly Another Brick in the Wall pt2 and Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, which blew me away with it's almighty mid-section) plus Roger's presence itself was something I will remember fondly until he swings by Melbourne next time to do it all again :) Plus I got a cool t-shirt :P |
I hope I get a chance to see them live, even if it's seperate.
I'm sure Roger will have more tours in the future, but I dont know about David. Hopefully he does, too. Does Rick ever tour? |
I think he's tagged along with David before, but I don't know about any individual tours =/
I want to see David, also. Unfortunately you just never know whether he will or not, and whether he'll come to you or not :( Whereas Roger seems to tour all the time :) |
Im going to see him monday, Im so excited.
|
I gotta wait until May to see Roger :(
|
Yes well theres probably lots of bands you see us Aussie's don't see at all.
|
Set the Controls For the Heart of the Sun was amazing aye.
What'd you think of Leaving Beirut? |
I don't like Leaving Beirut. didn't see it live, but the single isn't my thing. the spoken word passages are alright, but the chorus is just not as sophisticated as his usual commentary, and his lyrics really turned me off the song. I liked 'to kill a child' much better.
|
I don't think I've ever heard any solo Floyd stuff besides the song On An Island.
|
Hehe, Riva loves Roger Waters, hence my buying of the In The Flesh DVD and CD set.
And in terms of solo, I'd rate their careers thusly: Rick > Roger = Dave > Syd > Nick. |
have any of you guys heard the song "cluster one" off division bell? i love how pink floyd gives that eery feeling to their songs that almost makes you scared but it sounds so good at the same time
|

He has two solo albums, sort of.
Does Nick even have a solo career?
Yeah its total shite
|
Does Nick even have a solo career?
 I think he's more into driving cars |
I didn't even know Rick had a solo career. What albums do you recommend, Riva?
|
I haven't listened to any of Rick's solo stuff, but I think Wet Dream is supposed to be good. But don't take my word for it, remember I haven't listened to it.
|
Haha with a name like that it has to be good!
|
I've heard four songs from Wet Dream and they were all good but Pink's Song is my favorite(of the four I heard). I downloaded it but still haven't listened to Broken China.
|
Haha it seems those albums are Nick's solo career in name only. Did he have a lot to do with the writing process?
|
Doubt it. I never saw him as much of a writer.
As someone said above, he was always more interested in cars and racing. He seems a really nice guy though. I remember watching live 8, and he was getting interviewed by some young girl. She asks him whether there's been any tears back stage between the floyd members. "Tears?" he said, "Good god no; we're british". Made me laugh. |
Yeah, Nick to me has always struck me as the nicest of the five (including Syd)
|
I didn't even know Rick had a solo career. What albums do you recommend, Riva?
I predict Jason will say Broken China :P Which is actually growing on me a bit. By the by, I got Obscured By Clouds and it's quite good. Other than the rather dull instrumentals (it is a soundtrack afterall, so this is expected), the rest of the tracks are quite poppy (for their time) and enjoyable. I'll keep rotating it in my deck :thumb: |
Ive been looking out for earlier floyd albums still but no go. Its all Dark Side and Wall etc.
|

Roger wrote us in an e mail that for his 64th birthday in September, he got a call from David for the first time in over 20 years wishing him a happy birthday. Now there is a love/hate relationship. |
This is a shame :(
I know most K-mart and Targets don't even sell Dark Side. JB's where I do all my shopping and they have a magnificent range. Is there one near you? edit: to rippa by the way :P |

There's probably some discount CD stores that would have a wide range for sure. Or you could seek out a vinyl shop :smoke:
By the way RedDebil, that story about David calling Roger on his birthday is very sweet :) |
Sweet indeed.
Though lyrically, The Division Bell might not be as compelling as their Roger era stuff, I really like High Hopes, for the lyrics too. Sounds very much like they describe the relationship/what tore them apart. Particularly these lines jump out at me: Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again Dragged by the force of some inner tide Burnt bridges, how green it was on the other side (before the conflicts), and then moving past it but still drawn back to what they had before. I think compared to a Roger written song, the lyrics are still quite well written. :) What do you guys think about this album as far as lyrics go? I mean you can tell from this and David's Solo stuff that he really went ahead and built the musical side up to the balance he had intended, but yeah...i like them. :p |

I think it's more oriented towards Waters than any other songs, but I'm really not sure. Sounds to me like it. |
You know Rippa, I know you said you like to have the whole package, but you could download some of those albums from me and buy them later.
|
But see, as good as Gilmour gets, Waters just crushes him lyrically.
The one above was about the inter-Floyd fighting? try this: When the sleigh is heavy And the timber wolves are getting bold You look at your companions And test the water of their friendship With you toe They significantly edge Closer to the gold Each man has his price Bob And yours was pretty low History is short the sun just a minor star The poor man sells his kidneys In some colonial bazaar Que sera sera Just so much more skill and finesse in his writing. |
