I've been really getting into fingerpicking in the last month or two.
James does finger pick it...theres just something about the treble and bass together that sounds much better...it's like a piano effect. Chu it's good to have a teacher but with the internet you can reach out and teach you're self a good bit. Now that's not something you're always gonna wanna do but it's a start |
No it's not :(
Especially when you have to play something with your thumb and another thing with your fingers.
i find it pretty easy to do that, i know several songs where you have to play seperate strings at the same time without hitting the ones in between. Some of them are stairway to heaven, nothing else matters, never going back again and blackbird. Obviously all the songs aren't all by Metallica there just examples of songs with good fingerpicking. I know fingerpicking seems hard but if you practise its pretty simple i've been playing guitar under a year and just started finger picking a couple months ago and i've already got it down, If you need a simple song to start with use "under the bridge" by the chilli peppers its a good fingerpicking intro to start with |
I remember the first thing I tried finger picking was The Unforgiven, but in the end I sorta gave up. Just the other day I decided it was time I learnt to finger pick so I've been practising this piece by Bach. Good fun really.

Come to think of it that intro part to the unforgiven was the first fingerpicking thing i learnt too. I just sorta forgot about because i learned like my 3rd week playing and its not really considered a fingerpicking song because its just that one part that has fingerpicking |

I can play different strings easy but I mean a rhtyhm with your thumb and a totally different one with your fingers, like Jason Becker's Air. |

yeah man thats what i'm talking about too. I've never heard of Jason becker's Air though |
Yea I understand but just like that other post said there will be a time
when you will be able to do it...and sometimes you have to put it away for a while then try it later |
Yea I understand but just like that other post said there will be a time

Sometimes you're just not ready to try somethings, like i remember in like my second month i tried to learn pinch harmonics and i just couldn't do it. But i tried it again a week or so ago, its coming along pretty well |

http://www.911tabs.com/link/?1220938 check the bit out just after the intro and before the bit with the two guitars, that's hard. |
I commited guitar sucide when I printed the MOP tab
in my second week of playing (it took me three months) |

But like i said i've got fingerpicking down so mostly anything with fingerpicking is pretty easy for me. And although its easy that is a wonderful riff i enjoyed it, so thanks for showing me it:) |

I didn't I would do it for rive minutes then get pissed and throw my guitar
|

haha yeah that was a frustrating song for me too. especially with all the different ways to play that interlude riff thats like E---19--15---17--14------------------------- B-17-------17-------15---------------------- G-------------------------------------------- D-------------------------------------------- A-------------------------------------------- E-------------------------------------------- etc. I must have seen like 6 or 7 diff. ways to play it |
Yea I had trouble with this
----------------------0h2p0-------3---------------------------------------------------| ----------------3------------3------------3---3-------0-------0----------0----------0-| -------0-----2-----2------------2-------0---0---0-----------2---------2----------2----| -----2----0----------------------------------------2--------------------------1-------| ---2---------------------------------3-------------------0-------0-2--------2---------| -0------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| But once I learned it I was making all my guitar buddys jealous...so that helped my confidence |
:-/ I found the hardest thing was downpicking it all. Now I can do it easy.
|
You down pick that part?
|
No, I meant the whole verses n stuff. My book says you're meant to fingerpick the acoustic bit.
|
Downpicking all of MOP is fine, but you'll need to alternate pick Battery.
yes i know, i just said i loved my downpick ;) |
well kirk has his part and james has his part, so that may be a bit of the confusion.
You mean dual guitar? |
if you mean there are two different parts, then yes
|
Well the whole song has lots of layers. So think the breakdown
is actuelly 4 to 6 guitars |
It is about 4 guitars.
|
Yea I know I just wanted to make it seem a little more difficultthen it
really is |
haha. yeah it's on 12 guitars all played by James at the same time.
|
haha. yeah it's on 12 guitars all played by James at the same time.
 Yep, he just has like 24 hands and just plays them all at once. Eww, that would be just creepy if someone actually had that many hands. Side note: I bought a new epiphone les paul. :D I betchya if I put a gold cross, gold tuners and alnico pus, it would look just like James' gibson. |
Just out of interest, what are Metallica up to right now?
|
Just out of interest, what are Metallica up to right now?
Literally or generally? |
I can play all of pulling teeth.
all of FWTBT. most of MOP and Jason's best riffs. I don't play alotta bass
It's not I can't play Pulling Teeth I've just never thought about learning it. I'd be impressed if you could play Battery maintaining the speed plus making it sound good not fretting the notes sloppy. When I play it I can keep in time it's just I find I have to concentrate a bit more with my fretwork. Plus I play with fingers so it's alot more energetic. |
