the fan doesent sell out its the band that does
(but i dont recon metallica sold out)
Metallica never sold out. They simply changed. Cliff was the guy that didn't want videos (along with james) and Lars did. It was 2-1 and then since Lars did they did them. That doesn't mean they sold out. The Black Album doesn't mean they sold out either. Until Bob Rock they had several producers and this was one they liked. Just because he put together a good cd with them that was popular doesn't at all mean they sold out.
Fans sell out by saying "Oh I don't like Metallica anymore they're doing
some different stuff"

you know what I'm talking about?
I know what you mean, but it could just simply be the case where people don't like the music. Fans "sell out (even though they really can't)" if they don't like it in general simply because it's different.

well they should like it:)
If we all liked the same stuff it'd make a boring world.

I always hear people bitching about the 'new' Metallica. They always complain about there new albums being crap and their old ones being better. What i dont understand is why do they complain? why dont they just listen to the old stuff and not the new stuff? If you dont like thier new stuff...
DONT LISTEN TO IT.

They probably don't listen to it, but that doesn't stop them from being dissapointed at what the band has become.

PepsiMetal 11-01-2005 12:38 PM

Wouldn't metallica sellout if they say made an album right now JUST so they can please fans and no other reason. Afterall, they should do whatever they want to, not what someone wants them to do.

Yeah but they made a legacy of metal that inspired hundreds of thousands if not millions of people. This was a whole genre of music called thrash. They started it and now they are turning their back on it. I am one of those fans that are deeply disapointed by this. They turned their back on the type of music that they are good at because they want to "explore into new areas".

Nu - metal was just a fad and most of the guitarists were fans that were inspired by metallica. Metallica was trying to do new metal. Doesn't this seem a little @$$ backwards to you? A band trying to imitate ppl that they inspired.

I have been such a huge fan of metallica over the years but am just a little disappointed with their current music. Not every band is immune to the dreaded bad album and Metallica is no exception. Doesn't mean I hate them though. They just tried something new and it didn't work. Perhaps on the next album they'll revisit their roots and try to branch in another direction.

St. Anger really wasn't Nu-metal. The riffs may sound similar, but compare St. Anger to Korn or any other Nu-metal band and you'll see they are nothing alike.

I agree that an album to appease fans would be a sell-out. I hope they don't make a Master of Puppets Pt.2, even though I love that album. I want to see them move forward, not back.

We have to remember though that bands can move forward by embracing their older sounds, but repeating an album just to quiet fans is about the worst thing they can do.

I'm not saying that they should do anything like that, but they should've done something that sounds more like thrash (the genre that they started) and not something that sounds like a crappy Nu-metal band. James is my hero and to hear him screaming "tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tock, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tock" is annoying to the point that words cannot describe, when I've always regarded him as an excellent lyricist.

Jev 11-01-2005 01:09 PM

It'd be cool if it was more thrashier but I think it'll sound more like Load.

Definately. But I hope they do come up with something good. Especially with Rob, maybe he can help them out.

PepsiMetal 11-01-2005 01:55 PM

Yea I hope rob will add cool basslines and a solo here and there. But he probably wont. He'll just follow guitar most the time probably. But I mean if they really want to create another bad *** thrash album, Im sure they wouldn't have problems doing it. They probably just don't want to.

And yea, saint anger was far from nu-metal. But then again, it was far from early metallica too. Oh well..

Mmm, am I the only person who hears thrashier guitar work in St. Anger??
Lars said it was back to their roots, and god damn it was, we haven't seen the same speed for almost ~17 years. (Imagine if it was in Standard tuning, with a normal drum sound, I think it could honestly be mistaken for some of their early work!)

Although, the drums sounded horrible, Lars must still be doing hardcore drugs.

 I agree St. anger's riffs were very thrashy and are better than most we've heard from black album era. But they just did so many different things on st. anger it really didn't sound like any other band, not even metallica.

Jev 11-01-2005 02:23 PM

Hey Chu you got the Punk album right? It's just I got an e-mail saying it was never delivered. weird...

Chu 11-01-2005 02:40 PM

I definately got it :D

It's pretty good, I've given it a few listens, The Am I Evil (Which isn't a Metallica song? :x), cover, I think a female singer? Is very good :D
I have never heard the original I Disappear, so yeah, can't compare it but it is good.
The Enter Sandman cover isn't bad, but the Seek & Destroy cover totally makes the album worth it imo.

Jev 11-01-2005 02:44 PM

The I Disappear cover isn't far off the original.

Chu 11-01-2005 02:47 PM

The only bad thing about the majority of the songs is the vocalist(s).
I don't usually care how a vocalist sounds, but there really are some terrible vocalists there.

Jev 11-01-2005 02:52 PM

ah but what is punk without bad singing?

Chu 11-01-2005 02:54 PM

Good point, I guess it could almost be considered music in that case.

P.S. I don't really have an opinion on punk, the only punk I know (Which really isn't punk), is what the media, and mainstream call punk, i.e. Greenday. \m/

Yeah the one's you name are pretty much the highlights of the album. And that female vocalist rules from the Am I Evil cover, the cover itself seems a little slow but it's still cool.

EDIT: I wish they would have gone more into blackened at the end, I was well disappointed when it finished.

Then you most definitely gotta download stuff like the Ramones, Sex Pistols, Misfits, Agent Orange, and the like. In fact I do believe that it was Agent Orange that did the song Seek and Destroy on the Punk tribute to Metallica.

Chu 11-01-2005 03:43 PM

It was Agent Orange, I actually wouldn't mind looking more into them, if their songs were in the vein of Seek & Destroy, I can't say I'm really interested in punk, I haven't ever heard anything, but from what I have heard about it, it really doesn't sound that interesting to me :p

I've actually got to see them live. It was the most awesome show that I've been to so far. (I'm going to see Fear Factory and SYL on the 30th which would be even better but you know what I mean) They did this awesome surf punk rock cover of Secret Agent Man. It was great. I got to talk to the drummer for a few so that was cool too.

Father_Jack 11-01-2005 03:58 PM

Does anyone have any Agent Orange they wouldn't mind uploading? I'm quite interested in them even though punk has never really appealed to me.

I don't but I'm sure that if you asked in the R&M or Punk request thread, someone will hook you up.
