Scenes From A Memory. All that needs to be said about that topic.
I thought it might have been best to start him off with something smaller and then hit him with the masterpiece after, That way he might appreciate it more

munky_magik 01-24-2005 12:48 PM

SFAM is the most accesible DT album IMO because it contains all the elements of DT, but in smaller ammounts than usual. Also trying to figure out the concept behind it is bound to keep anyone entertained for a good while :)

IvortheEngineDriver 01-24-2005 12:53 PM

^^^^
I don't know, I think Images and Words and Train of Thought are great DT to start off on...I love em both, more than SFAM, though...Overture 1928 owns my *** :)

munky_magik 01-24-2005 12:57 PM

Images and Words and TOT are too extreme for getting into them I think.
SFAM gives a perfect representation of the band and all their parts, where as TOT is leaning more towards the the heavy, shred sound and IAW is very proggy and soft.
SFAm represents both these apsects and combines them brillantly, so IMO it would be the best album to be introduced to them with.

drum2k 01-24-2005 01:07 PM

I feel the need to recommend "Fony" as they should be alot bigger than they are. www.fonymusic.com check out a few of their songs in the download section of their site :) Its metaly quite heavy, but not like killswitch or machine head

munky_magik 01-24-2005 01:21 PM

This thread is for asking for reccomendations, not randomly reccomending things. Please, if you're going to participate in a thread then find out what it is about.

What's a good Grateful Dead album, to get into their music?

jpj 01-24-2005 11:03 PM

American Beauty and Working Man's Dead are generally considered their best, although I find American Beauty to be very bland. If you're looking for more psychadelic stuff, Live Dead and Aoxomoxoa are both great.

Songs For The Deaf

3rdplanet 01-25-2005 05:51 PM

Songs for the Deaf is very accesiable I would say, especially seeing as the major singles (asides Lost Art...) are off it.

None of their albums are bad though, I personally like their Self Titled album the most, but yeah, Songs for the Deaf.

MAthiAS 01-25-2005 09:52 PM

Yep, Songs for the Deaf.

Sgt.Pepper 01-25-2005 10:51 PM

I'm looking to get into some new music I like a variety of musicians/bands including:

Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, AIC, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Yes, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, The Beatles, Smashing Pumpkins, Velvet Underground, Radiohead, R.E.M, U2, The Who, The Rolling Stones, just to name a few.

if you know of some good bands in those type of genres please recommend something

Sgt.Pepper 01-25-2005 10:53 PM

this is really off topic but I just joined and I was wondering how to get a picture beside you name. (I hope that I don't sound really stupid for not knowing how)

slaytallica250 01-25-2005 11:01 PM

Go to "User CP" on top of the page and click on "Edit Avatar" on the left side.

Since you like AiC, I would recommend looking into Mad Season, as well as Jerry Cantrell's solo work. Degradation Trip is better than Boggy Depot imo, but they're both good.

Ayotte 01-27-2005 11:40 AM
I'm looking for some old thrash or heavy metal. Stuff like Anthrax, Testament, Metallica, Megadeth etc. Preferrably more obscure though, otherwise I have probably already heard it.

Also lookin for some classic rock reccomendations. At the moment I like Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, Deep Purple.
King's X - Dogman or Gretchen Goes to Nebraska

Peace Sells
The Conjuring
In My Darkest Hour
Mechanix
Killing Is My Buisness
Skin O' My Teeth

Believer 01-27-2005 12:52 PM

Can someone suggest some good melodic or technical death??? I love bands like At the Gates, In Flames and Carcass... running out of good music..

Oh yah suggest songs, not just bands, thanks

shawnson 01-27-2005 01:04 PM

if you like classic rock, and thrash/metal, get some diamond head. songs like "am i evil", "blitzkreig", "sucking my love", and "the prince" are all good.

as for classic rock, check out the who and rush. "won't get fooled again", "pinball wizard", and "my generation" are good who tunes, and "2112", "spirit of radio", "yyz", and "working man" are some of rush's best.

Biancazzurri 01-27-2005 01:33 PM

Poverty's no Crime is very very underrated band, i can equalize them from the talent view (no technical but musicianship) to DT

jimiandangus12 01-27-2005 01:42 PM

I'm getting into The Dillinger Escape Plan and I'm wondering what cd of their's I should get first, thanks.

Tyler 01-27-2005 02:06 PM

Personally, if you want variety and more accessibility, I'd say Miss Machine. If you want the one that made them who they are, I'd say Calculating Infinity. They only have two cds, unless you count the Under The Running Board EP and The Irony Is A Dead Scene EP, so you really can't go wrong with whatevery you choose.

jimiandangus12 01-27-2005 02:07 PM

ok thanks

perry589 01-27-2005 02:26 PM

Can anyone recommend me some Dungeon, or even send me a couple of their songs via e-mail? Thanks if anyone can help.

Permanent Solution 01-28-2005 09:59 AM

Recommend me some metal, any style, that I can branch into from a start of:

Metallica
Slayer
Pantera
COB
In Flames
Dimmu Borgir
Manowar
Iron Maiden
Arch Enemy
Blind Guardian
Dragonforce
Iced Earth
(Metalcore: A7x, KSE, Unearth, LOG)

Thanks.

CaptainWaits 01-28-2005 10:07 AM

Metallica = Megadeth
Slayer = Overkill, Exodus, Dark Angel, Sepultura
Pantera + COC = Crowbar, Down
In Flames + Arch Enemy = Soilwork, Dark Tranquility
Dimmu Borgir = Cradle of Filth, Amorphis (old stuff)
Manowar + Iron Maiden = Hammerfall, Helloween
Blind Guardian + Dragon Force + Iced Earth = Rhapsody, Evergrey, Symphony X, Angra, Sonata Arctica, Primal Fear
Metalcore = I couldn't give you a thing

Dancin' Man 01-28-2005 10:11 AM

Metalcore - Between the Buried and me (More like technical death metal with emo sections but it's close and good), Converge (again, this is hardcore I think but very good and close), Dillinger Escape Plan (Progressive hardcore grindcore)

Sorry that's as well as I can do. I don't like most Metalcore but this stuff is all somewhat close and very good.

gahkanpalz 01-28-2005 11:36 AM

nirvana-nevermind
pearl jam-10
the clash- the singles
pink floyd-the wall and darkside
anything zeppelin
GNR-appetite for destruction
