I too was once a rap hater, but, due to the combination of how awesome the base sounds on my friends subs and the way that one of the members of outkast always thanked the good lord himself first and foremost at each of the numerous awards he received. Up until then i had pretty much the same opinions as Mr. Walking stereotype up there. But as i said, i'm comin around.

Thanks, ATM. :)

slashjunior 05-29-2005 05:26 AM

I agree entirely with the thread starter.

Flip the coin around and fans of rap could pigeon-hole metal and say its all about slaying dragons or working for satan or whatever, castrating goats, slitting their wrists because of teenage angst and depression who all walk around in black with a pale complection on their faces. Or go on about prog bands sing about flowers and the trees and the earth.

However, fans of these genres know it isn't all like that. That's mainly what goes on in the mainstream. Its the same with rap. I don't judge metal by Slipknot or Limp Bizkit, so why should you judge the whole of the rap genre on someone like Chingy, Nelly or 50 Cent?

I notice a lot of people in rock also worry about the technicality of the instrumentalists and the fact they play instruments. A lot of rap groups are backed by jazz groups, which is arguably much more complicated than rock music.

Also who says a group of musicians must consist of guitar, bass, drums and maybe a keyboardist. Its formulas like these that annoy me the most, and rock fans reckoning they are more hardcore because they listen to rock. You're just the same lame trend follower just listening to rock and wearing the clothes to fit in with your peers and the same old cliches. It's a normal human thing to do to fit into groups which applies to all genres.

And while we are on the subject of rock, if it supposedly is more superior to this radio crap then why don't "average" listeners buy it and only the instrumentalists who apparently "understand" the quality of the music because they are technically proficient on their instruments? You can't blame record companies, MTV or radio either, the customer decides what they listen to. If people didn't like Eminem or Britney or whoever is hot at the moment then people wouldn't buy it, in turn MTV, record companies and record companies would start releasing more records that would suit the public more.

Rant over.

ATM 05-29-2005 05:31 AM

^ I like you.

Bartender 05-29-2005 07:45 AM

I didn't like how he went from "you shouldn't judge rap by it's mainstream stereotypes" to "You're just the same lame trend follower just listening to rock and wearing the clothes to fit in with your peers and the same old cliches."

Definetly. Currently me and my friend are looking for a saxophonist to play in our band, and we play a lot of metal.
I think its more like 13 now.
and now one with Elton John! I like most of Tupacs work.

BrokenSaint 05-29-2005 07:36 PM

I want a vibrophone player in my band.. that'd be hardcore..

guitar123 05-29-2005 08:22 PM

I know man, rap is like so gay. Its not even music.

The Goth 05-30-2005 03:29 AM

I will never like rap. I dont see any talent in telling rhymes fast which contain the guy having sex and doing drugs and getting pi$$ed. Theyre all good but why keep speaking to us about it ?

See how that works both ways.

Singled out the ones that I especially like.

Except Amethyst Rock Star is better than Saul Williams' self-titled, and The Low-End Theory is better than People's Instinctive.....

Iai 05-30-2005 01:04 PM

Hahaha. That 'The Goth' kid is the single worst poster I've ever seen on MX.

I didn't read the whole thread, but I love Rap, and I don't know if anyone in this thread is from the bay area, so I got some recommendations. Almost everything I listen to is Underground bay area rap, with the exception of a few:

Immortal Technique
Yukmouth
Blacklicious
Andre Nickatina/Dre Dog
Spice 1
X raided
Mr. Doctor
Brotha Lynch
C-Bo
Cougnut
Del TFH
Dr. Octagon
Dru Down
E-40
Equipto
JT the bigga figga
Living Legends
Mac Dre (R.I.P.)
MC Eiht
Rappin 4 Tay

Probably a few other too, trying to think of all my CD's.

Hendrix92 05-30-2005 10:03 PM

And Midnight Marauders is better than The Low End Theory. They're all three greatness tho. :)

Iai 05-31-2005 11:55 AM

Haha. You broke the link even more, and still didn't catch your bad spelling in the third line.

In any case, he was calling you an idiot because you're trapped in a mindset that rap music only has value if it's gimmicky.

Thank you. Your post was a shining beacon of open-mindedness, and has been constructive to this thread. Go give yourself a pat on the back and down a few bleach smoothies.

tazzdevil316 06-01-2005 05:10 AM

and people wonder why rock fans...watever type you are get a bad name. Yeah many of us are open minded and give reasoned opinions...but there are sum who are hate mongerers and thats sad cos thats all the commercial world sees of us YOU'RE GIVING US ALL A BAD NAME AND GIVING PEOPLE AN EXCUSE TO HIT OUT AT US ALL.
Personally I see real rap as an artform that I dont personally appreciate, I wont bad mouth it cos i dont like it personally cos thats closed minded, just like they say metal is all noise and shouting (I SHOULD KNOW, I GET IT IN THE NECK FROM MY GF) well thats my rant for today, open your minds. please!

Iai 06-01-2005 05:16 PM

Out of those I only really like Blackalicious, Dr Octagon, Del, Brotha Lynch Hung and Living Legends.

Still, when talking Bay, you should always mention Souls Of Mischief (and the rest of Hiero), Planet Asia, and Zion I.

Hell, I'm surprised you didn't mention Ant Banks and Too $hort, although I got out of that kind of stuff ages ago.

Black metal heads liking Bay area gangster rap is a beautiful sight. Not that I like gangster rap - stopped listening to it when I turned 14 or something. This is just awesome.
