When i first listened to it i thought that there were only a few good songs, but they are all really good. The only when i dont really like is Lost in Hollywood. Other than that they are all really good.
I think lost in hollywood is a great song. It's probably like 5th best or something off the album for me.

BillCosby 05-26-2005 09:16 PM

I'm really diggin' the new album.

Shattered_Future 05-26-2005 09:17 PM
Well heres what I'm saying:

Imagine your in a band and all of a sudden one of the members starts doing everything, I think you'd be pissed, ESPECIALLY if you have had some success.
I'm a SOAD fan and I used to think Daron was the greatest; but I feel bad for Shavo. I mean he barely played anything on the new albums. And think about Serj. Half the time he's not even singing his own lyrics. I don't think it would be wise to kick Daron out but you have to look at it from every angle.

And didn't Serj write all the lyrics for the first album? I'm too lazy to check the booklet
In Nightwish, Tuomas (the keyboard player) writes ALL of their music...the overwhelming majority by himself.

Yet they have released upwards of 5 albums (i think).

If the one person is good at what they do (in Nighwish's and SOADs IMO) then by all means LET them.

Huber 05-26-2005 09:18 PM

Don't know if this was already discussed but...

I heard this thing about Lars Ulrich "air drumming at a SOAD concert" and digging it and whatever. I think people expect a tour from the two. So what do you think of a SOAD Metallica Tour?

That'd be the ****.

TheCrimsonKing 05-26-2005 09:21 PM

I was thinking the same thing about having one guy do all the work. I feel its gotta suck for the rest of the members and I would guess they would quit or start side projects. The thing is that daron is really running things, in a good way, and its really his ideas and songs that are pretty much keeping system of a down alive. Serj is cool to and i find it sort of messed up that daron is also doing a good chunk of the singing, although I like darons voice too. Shavo didnt get to play his bass on the record for the most part but hey its all good :)

Shattered_Future 05-26-2005 09:23 PM
That'd be the ****.
I'd think it would be weird...2 completely different bands touring together would be kinda odd...

Then again, Megadeth and Dream Theater are on tour, so i guess anything goes.

I personally think that would be awesome, i'm also looking forward the Mars Volta/SOAD tour later this year. One more band is supposed to be added, who knows who it'll be(certainly not Metallica, but that'd be great).

That would definetely be one concert that I wouldn't miss.

Darkness 05-26-2005 09:32 PM

I heard the new cd at the cd store in the sampling thingy and I thought some of it was really cool... I laughed pretty hard at some of the songs (cigaro), so did my friend whos a hardcore fan.

Dr. Jake Destructo 05-26-2005 10:03 PM
I reccomend the first album to anyone who doesn't have it. I find it much more 'pure', not some watered down crap.

/cant explain
i totally agree...like toxicity was pretty good but their new one (mezmerize) is no where near as good as their first one

AIC/EAZY-E 05-27-2005 03:24 AM

Explain. Mesmerize isn't very lengthy, and it IS part of a 2 CD set, but on it's own it stands as a good record. It has it's fare shares of self-titledness too (This Cocaine.. mostly). I don't think Daron and co. are trying to make records one better than the other, just all different, and then as a whole catalogue, the material proves to be all on the same level just in different aspects. Self-titled, Toxicity, Steal This Album, Mesmerize all boast one feature particularly better than the other, eg. the songwriting is best on Self-titled, Steal this Album covers the most ground, Mesmerize is them at their instrumental best (even though there's no solo's ala. Soil) and Toxicity has a mix of all these things proving to be an overall fan favourite and the most accessable (IMO). SOAD really do have a wide spectrum once you're familiar with everything they've done.

Ultimate Donky 05-27-2005 03:34 AM

^agreed

I think Mesmerize is SOAD's best work, but I could see how some who call themselves SOAD fans wouldn't like it. It doesn't have the raw aggression of the self-titled album, and that is part of what originally attracted many SOAD fans. It just depends on particular taste. I like that SOAD are trying different things and growing with every album, it keeps them sounding fresh.

Mambuto_O'Mally 05-27-2005 07:43 AM

^^^
How can you say its their best work. I mean listen to the intensity and pure rawness from the first album. And even though its not the greatest I love the drum sound on that one.

Iceman-rocker 05-27-2005 08:09 AM

self titled, and mezmerize are my favorites. i used to really like toxicity but after listening to it forever i got bored. and i never really liked steal this album that much, except for a couple songs. question! is such a cool song.

I also agree that mesmerize might be soad's best work so far. Sure Chop Suey kicks *** the most, but still, almost all songs on mesmerize are great.

Someone mentioned it earlier. Yeah i think that would be a fantastic tour. Maybe add in a few other less popular bands and they could have another Summer Sanitarium.

Like:

Metallica
System of a Daron
Killswitch Engage
Mastodon

4 completely different bands, but it would be a great tour anyway.

cos you know that i can 05-27-2005 12:01 PM

Has anyone seen SOAD play recently, or have any idea what songs they might be playing live? I'm seeing them next Friday, at the Brixton Academy in London. Should be insane:)

Ah, thanks. Looks pretty sweet, they've got a load of my favourite SOAD songs on the setlist, and also Holy Mountain from Hypnotize, which I haven't heard yet. :thumb:

saw them at the 9:30 Club in DC a couple weeks ago. fairly short set (hour and 10 minutes) with no audience interaction, but they rocked nonetheless. they pretty much played the Austin set list (found on their website) minus Holy Mountains.

I find that too...

..but I just don't like them all together.

I mean some of their best work is on that album, but all together I don't like it as much

Are you as confused as I am right now?

i have toxicity and mezmerize....... now mezmerize has ALOT of good songs but like b4 said they don't fit on the same cd which is good for some people, it gives u a bit of everything

Toxicity has some good songs which are good and some jus bore me like "X" and "Jet Pilot" but its an album with more meaningful lyrics then Mezmerize and is a lot harder than it

I have every one of there albums they are one of my favorite bands...i agree w/ u on some parts of what you said...like mezmerize has a little bit of everything and isnt as hard and has a lot of good song...BUT...IMO i think everyone of there albums has a lot of good songs and some that bore you, it just deoends on the person and what you like because alot of people dont like STA...but i like it...it just depends

Well, yeah, it is. Daron sings a whole lot more than he used to and if I am not mistaken he recorded a lot of bass on this album too. The only person he hasn't bothered yet is John. Besides, Serj's voice destroys Daron's.

azbassman 05-28-2005 04:06 PM

I like darons voice...but thats it...serj just has on of the most versitile voices he can go high and he can go low he does destroy daron

Daron does write most of the drum parts, in fact he said that the drums are the first part he thinks up when he writes a song. But yeah I don't think John has to worry about Daron taking over his drumming duties, John can play very well. Daron only played some of the tougher bass parts on the new album, since Shavo is a very average bassist and hadn't mastered them enough yet.

Rothmans 05-28-2005 05:30 PM

Metal hammer gave it 10/10 for some reason I dont htink it deserved it and it kept blowing its horn.

NoHero9 05-28-2005 05:40 PM

The first album is definitely the best, mezmerize makes my ears bleed blood. How come Daron sounds like ringo starr on the last song? Cigarro is the only song i remotely like.

The first album is the best if you're looking for aggression, yes. So that makes sense that you only like Cigaro from the new album. As for the "Daron with a british accent" thing.....he's just doing what SOAD does quite often, satirizing.
