True. I really don't understand why everyone's so convinced he's another famous guitarist in disguise. So few people seem prepared to think that he might be famous in his own right, and that if they were told his real name they'd just go 'what?'.

Low_End_Communications 08-17-2005 09:34 AM

Everytime I see a picture of him though, his hands look very girly. Don't ask me why. I never said he was anther celebrity guitarist... I just thought he was a chick.
I'll probably just be on for a few minutes - I should be able to put a quicktime of the whole thing up. I usually just sing back up in NR. But I do sing lead on a couple of songs (supermarket, crane to the head, etc.) - It's not hard to sing and play because I rehearsed/practiced it enough times. I use all of my fingers when I tap and even both thumbs (the left thumb for long stretches or weird chords). :thumb:
Jean, what's up? Decided to give this thing a well needed bump after seeing your update at TalkBass. The Claw sounds very intriguing. I think next summer when I'm roadtripping, California, and specifically yours and John Turners homes will be on my pit stop list!

hey guys.... okay, I'm back.

It should be on the front page of the site in the text... I think.
Ahh, hmm. Thought the Joust was a 9.

With the wood bridge... is it like some luthiers crazy adjustabel bridges made of wood, or a single saddle thing? If single... does that mean a fretless 11?
The bridge is wood, but there are individual saddles for each string which are metal and adjustable. It's not a fretless... but I'd like to get a fretless 11 in the future.
Jean,

I read that on your influences you rate some of the great film composers near the top of the list. I was just wondering if there are any specific films you watch over and over again just for the film score. I'm working on one myself at the moment but am unsure where to look as a guideline of sorts.

Also, how do you rate Stanley Clarkes soundtracks? I know he's done the "Transporter" and "Romeo Must Die" along with a handful of others. Being that he's a bassist first and composer second, I was just curious as to what you think of his film stuff.

Cheers
CK
I have a hard time watching movies over and over again... hahaha. I can do that with music but with movies they begin to lose the "effect". But I do have soundtracks that I listen to repeatedly. One of my favorites is "The Day the Earth Stood Still" by Bernard Herrmann.

Honestly, I haven't really paid attention to any of Stanley Clarke's soundtracks.. I did see Romeo must Die in the theaters but I can recall anything about the soundtrack. As I said before, I'm not much of follower of "bass" or "bassist" music.

Although, ironically, I have been composing some background music for an independent film the last couple of weeks.

Jean Baudin 08-29-2005 01:02 PM
kind of a bizzare question but...

where do you get your strings for things above 6 stringers...i would imagine they are pretty hard to come by
I get them directly from Conklin. I also have some special length custom strings I get from LaBella.

Jean Baudin 08-29-2005 01:05 PM
At least I found someone who knows Jason Becker, who to me if he didn't have that illness would still be the best guitarist in history. Jean, in your opinion isn't he at least one of the best?
Yeah, definitely... It was a great pleasure to get a few lessons from him and and jam with him.

Yeah, he introduced himself as Brian. Wasn't wearing a mask... just looks like a regular guy with long hair... and he's super tall.
Hey jean man its tenor again i know, i have been listening to supermarket alot lately. Awsome song man. can you explian the slap pattern you do in it? like slap pop mute etc...... thanks bro
I don't really slap on that song... the middle part is actual the guitarist slapping and I play a kinda arabic bass melody over it.

I sing the main vocal and the singer is doing the screeching thing. No worries about sounding fanboyish - it's the guys with the rabbit ears eating carrots that come to our shows that concern me.

The claw will be crazy. we are trying to find some 1" 6-32 set screws for the custom bridge right now. The bridge has 44 custom-milled brass pieces and requires 44 screws.

I think JT is georgia.
Jean, do you have a job other than bass playing?

Not really. I do have some money saved up (I actually made a lot of money from the stock market a while back... believe or not). Though, I better get the solo CD, instructional video, book done soon or I'll be hurting... hahaha.

When I was a kid I saved up money from Straw Hat Pizza to buy my first custom ($500). I also worked for my brother's company and I had a job as a video game designer for a couple of years (unfortunately, nothing ever got released but one of the games was featured as a preview in a few mags - that was during trailing end of the SNES/Genesis when the Playstation and Saturn were first coming out).

I played a 6 before the 9. It was a little disorienting at first, but I got used to it pretty quickly.

yeah, the playstation kinda ruined the whole game-mentality :D

My question is:

How do you write your lines?
Do you just start playing, or do you know what meldoy you wanna play and then you play on your bass without any improvising and doodling?
Jean, what kind of effects do you like to use,if you don't mind me asking?
Any and all.

My favorite right now is using the MIDI sounds mixed with my bass. I keep the synth stuff much lower in mix... I recorded something the other day with a Choir under my notes... the choir would only be heard when I held a note. Fun stuff.

Ren & Stimpy. I like a lot of anime - Maison Ikkoku, Chobits, Rahxephon, Eva, Studio Ghibli (Princess Mononoke, Laputa, Spirited Away, etc.). Not into the pRon anime (girls getting raped by tentacles just doesn't do anything for me)

I don't watch any TV. But I have watched some DVD collections of TV shows (24, Oz, Six Feet Under).

Other than that I like walks on the beach, sunsets and ... wait a second here. ;) ;) ;)

fatbandit 08-31-2005 12:22 PM

Ooh, if I catch you online...

Do you have any tabs for What Would HeMan Do? I'm very obsessed with that song right now, and having just got my 7 string, you're very inspring to me as to how an ERB can fit into a heavy/fun/quirky/good band well and gel with the other instruments.

Thanks a bunch dude, though I'm pretty sure you'll tell me to tab it by ear ;)!

I write a number of ways. Sometimes I'll hear something in my head, and try to figure it out with my fingers... sometimes I'm working on a technique and something pops out of it. Sometimes I'll take a phone number/word/name and place each digit/letter on a fret. Things like that. I do a lot of "doodling" too - I can sit and play and make up stuff for hours, but in the end I usually forget what I played as it was just a stream of consciousness.

Heh, I had a girlfriend till a few days ago, and then she came over this morning and yeah... there were some activities that occurred prior to me making that post...

Ren and Stimpy was a great show back in the day. When Spike tried to come out with the new version, they ruined it. Too adult oriented. And yeah, anime pr0n is t3h grosszorz.

Is there a tab program that works on a Mac? That song can probably be played on a 5-string. Or I can try to put a couple of parts in here.

Jean, I used to enjoy your music, before you revealed to the forum that you DON'T like tentacle anime. How disgusting. :thumb:

fatbandit 08-31-2005 12:35 PM

That's not anime, that's Hentai!

And yes, Jean, if you could, I would love you. I have a 5 and a 7, so whatever works for you man.

I don't know if they work on Macs, but the only tab programs I know are Guitar Pro and Powertab.

Save your love for a woman. See if this works:

he-man intro/outro:

G-------------------------------------------
D-----4--------5--------7--7---------5----
A-------------------------------------------
E--2-----2--3----3--5---------5--3--------
B-------------------------------------------

G----------------------------------------------
D-----4--------5--------7--7---------5--5--5-
A----------------------------------------------
E--2-----2--3----3--5---------5--3-----------
B----------------------------------------------

he-man verse:
G-----------------------------------------------------
D-----------------------------------------------------
A--------------5-----(x6)------0--5--0--5--5--6--6-
E-----------6-----------------------------------------
B--0--4--8--------------------------------------------

The variants and the chorus you'll have to figure out for yourself. :D

On the verse, just hammer the 4 and 8, the open b should be the only note you pluck on the low string.

if any of you want to hear this in context, check my myspace page.
