Gilmour had an incredible amount of great solos. The Thin Ice, Mother, CN, Time, Dogs, Pigs, Echoes, and One of My Turns come to my head right now, but I'm sure I'm leaving a bunch out.
I always loved his solos on The Wall. Very deep, managing to express the whole dark tone in ways even Waters' lyrics have trouble doing.

Daddy's flown across the ocean...

I love the wall. It's so increible. are there any documentary's on it?

standard 11-19-2005 09:30 PM

Maybe the movie.

It kinda explains it.

Well there's the movie. And the DVD has special features with some interviews and insights, so the special features are kind of like a documentary.

Theres a documentary on the huge stage show that can be found on the Echoes webpage. Just go to Pinkfloyd.com and find your way to the videos section.

Obscured By Clouds is such a great album! Gilmour shines throughout the whole album with some great solos. The best probably on "The Gold It's In The...". Glad I finally picked it up.
That's how I got into Floyd too, my dad bought me a copy of Dark Side. I didn't like it at first, that was when I first got into classic rock and my favorite band was Zeppelin. It was so much different. It took me about a month to really get into it.
It's great. It was last christmas when my dad bought me tw two albums, and at first I hated it. I thought it was awful, then one day i just sort of liked it, and here I am now. But since last christmas, I've got into Metal. But Floyd have a reserved space in my big book of things I like. DSOTM showed me about real music.

Pretty much the same thing happened with me. I was getting into Led Zeppelin and decided I should start collecting vinyl of classic rock. I was digging in a crate on a second hand market and came across DSOTM and the cover looked familiar but I browsed further. Luckily my father stood behind me and convinced me to buy that album as well since it was only 50 cents. My first vinyl albums were some really good ones (i.e. DSOTM, Led Zeppelin's II and IV and Neil Young's Harvest (also a suggestion of my dad)). I liked it from the start but didn't gave it too much attention until one day I decided to get some other Pink Floyd albums (which were Wish You Were Here and The Wall).:)

Yea I colect vinyl too. But I've never been able to find any floyd. I've got some good Zep and Hendrix...basicaly all the good 60's bands. I need to get DSOTM
though.

LF96 11-20-2005 12:38 PM

Most of their vinyls aren't too hard to find except maybe PATGOD... I think you can find that one for the same price as a cd if you search a little tho. I see The Wall and DSOTM all the time on second hand markets... :)

Britton 11-20-2005 12:40 PM

I never have and I search a couple times a month. I'm not sure why I can't
find them. They sold so many darn copies

LF96 11-20-2005 12:46 PM

Try ebay. You can get them for 5 bucks or something on there.

I don't know, most of the solos on TDB just don't convey the same type of emotion for me that the ones off The Wall do. WYWH has some good ones though, the solo in the first part of SOYCD is one of my favorites.

DeusExMachina 11-20-2005 04:05 PM

I love the guitar playing on TDB, I think it's very emotional. Also, the tone is just orgasmic.

DeusExMachina 11-20-2005 09:58 PM

I'm sure you can get them on amazon as well.

Floydfanatic 11-20-2005 10:08 PM

i just wanna clarify
the waters era pink floyd didn't do drugs right?

i was always under the impression that they didn't do that much, probably pot and ****

Unnamed_One 11-20-2005 10:15 PM

First off, Pink Floyd I agree is a great band, I own a bunch of their albums, but why should it be labeled "The most Influential"? I have been wondering this for quite a great deal of time. Can anybody give me a valid reasoning or list of examples of Pink Floyd's influences in the music of today? If someone could try and post it that would be great.

No, they didn't really do drugs much, contrary to popular belief.

Pink Floyd's influence can be seen in stuff like Radiohead, and less explicitly in other progressive bands like Tool. But, I'd say most - if not all - progressive bands today are in some way influenced by Pink Floyd, whether or not they realize it.

I can't see a way that a single modern Prog rock band doesn't have a distinct Floyd influence. I mean, lots of The Mars Volta screams Pink Floyd, and Dream Theater often make a point of how much Pink Floyd inspired them.

Bottom line if you've ever tried to record something you have to have a deep
respect for the Floyd. And if you're ever claimed to enjoy good music you are
gonna respect Floyd. I can see some big influences in those bands you mentioned. One of the cool things about them is they reach out to lots of people
and you can just feel the emotion and that what they are doing is important to them.

Don't get me wrong, I really like TDB, and I'm not saying it's not emotional, I just get a stronger emotional vibe from The Wall.
