Well_Respected_Man 07-26-2004 03:28 PM

um whats going on here

*bump*

OrbDragon 07-26-2004 03:36 PM

To be honest I don't know for sure either what I did wrong. But apperantly I did something...anyway, it don't matter anymore.

So much for being assertive.

Bartender 07-26-2004 03:38 PM

It's just that you have to review a song suggested by the last reviewer in his last review, not just any songs suggested in the thread. I hope you carry on taking part, I want recommendations.

Well_Respected_Man 07-26-2004 03:44 PM

Well my songs are next, and it's been a good day.

Bartender 07-26-2004 03:50 PM

I'm downloading one of them, but I don't usually call dibs until I actually have the song. It's coming though, unless someone else wants to jump in before me.
It's just that you have to review a song suggested by the last reviewer in his last review, not just any songs suggested in the thread. I hope you carry on taking part, I want recommendations.
Must be an unwritten rule then.

Bartender 07-26-2004 05:07 PM

I guess it was, in this thread. Sorry, I suppose we just kinda took it for granted.

Okay, I'll take proper dibs now.

Bartender 07-26-2004 05:20 PM

Dave Brubeck - Take Five - 5:26

Starts of with just percussion, soon joined by a cool little repeating piano melody though. Then, soon after, we get a really nice, mellow saxophone? playing the lead of the song.

When the sax drops off, the drums become the main focus of the song, whilst the piano continues its repeating melody in the background. The solo lasts quite a while (up to about 4:20), until the piano begins to quiet down a bit, and the drums resume cymbal-tapping (and calm down on all other fronts) as the wind instrument (whatever it is) reenters.

Kind of a difficult song to review, especially knowing as little jazz as I do. I liked the main melody the lead instrument was following (before and after the drum solo). The drum solo itself felt a bit overlong, but when it was happening it didn't sound forced, it sounded quite natural, quite organic, which was good.

8/10. I definitely enjoyed it, I'm just not sure why.

Songs:
Fantomas - Page 29 (30 second "song" from debut album)
Bruford - Five G (Jazz/fusion)
Massive Attack - Teardrop, Risingson or Angel (trip-hop)

Jaded 07-26-2004 05:49 PM

Massive Attack-Teardrop
Trippy stuff, kind of like the Flaming Lips. Not really my style but I did kind of like it. It kind of sets a relaxing mood, kind of ambient and stuff. I'm not crazy about most female singers (unfortuantly), but other than that I thought it was a cool song worth checking out if you are into weird indie stuff like this.
7/10

Song:
Atmosphere- Gods Bathroom Floor (underground hip hop)

Bartender 07-26-2004 07:23 PM

I'm going to bed soon, just a bump for others

OrbDragon 07-27-2004 02:33 AM

Atmosphere - Gods Bathroom Floor
Atmosphere was a rap group that someone on my school recommended not too long ago...but I haven't heard this song yet. It starts with a soulful bass riff and a loungy saxophone riff, with Slug rapping various random words. There are some very fuzzy samples throughout the song, and the production is very introvert....really nice. The lyrics (they seem autobiographical) and flow by really good and that's what I like in hip-hop. Good stuff indeed. 8/10

My pick:

dEUS - Put The Freaks Up Front

manuscriptreplica 07-27-2004 02:37 AM

Oh well. I'll dib that dEUS song then. The God's Bathroom Floor is an excellet song, one of the better hip hop songs I've heard in a while. 9/10.

OrbDragon 07-27-2004 02:46 AM

I also think "Trying To Fing A Balance" is a good song...I like everything I've heard from Atmosphere so far.

manuscriptreplica 07-27-2004 06:27 AM

dEUS - Put The Freaks Up Front

This was an interesting listen. I don't really know what genre it is, alternative I suppose...
I don't even know what other bands they sound like, since I've really never heard anything like it before. It sounds a bit like Regurgitator, in parts. There's lots of harmonies and melodies going on all around the place. It would be a more interesting listen in headphones, though I can't be bothered finding them. It starts with a really high pitched guitar sound. I don't like the dude's vocals much, they sound a bit nothing-ish to me, too generic, to like-everyone-else. Oh well. It fits the music decently enough. It is a fairly basic sort of song - chords and stuff. The random things in the background make it pretty interesting though.

6/10.

Dragonforce - Disciples of Babylon (Thrash-esque Power Metal)
Spinal Tap - Sex Farm (British Rock)
Regurgitator - G7 Dick Electro Boogie (Electronica/Hip hop)

Dubs

pixiesfanyo 07-27-2004 10:20 AM

Spinal Tap - Sex Farm

Starts off with a metal riff. Breaks into lyrics, pretty funny (since that is what Spinal Tap is about) but not making me laugh. They almost remind me of the Darkness only they don't suck. The chorus is kind of bad, also the vocals are very low hard to make out in the song. Interesting drum beat. But mostly it's not very interesting. There is some keys occasionally through out the piece but they don't really attribute that well. I don't really like this song. It just reminds me of hair spray and bad 80s metal. Yuck.

3.4/10

My Songs:
Thrice - Eleanor Rigby
Violent Femmes - Blister in the Sun
Corey Hart - Sunglasses at Night

You really should put the genres of the songs your recommending

lilpete86 07-27-2004 10:48 AM

Corey Heart - Sunglasses At Night - 3:57

What can I say but man the synth on this is cheesy :p . The song starts of with this synth riff and the vocals come in about 0:16. I suddenly get that feeling that you get when your not sure whether or not you've heard a song before, I get a familiar feeling from this song but I don't think i've ever heard it before
At about 1:00 the guitar creeps in repeating a lick behind the vocals, the song then returns to how it was before. One of the annoying things of this song is the reptitiveness of the lyrics, there doesn't seem to be a lot of variation in them. The song leads out with a typical rock anthem solo.
I'm still rather confused as to what genre to put this in  probably cheesy synth rock :)

anyways not my sort of thing

3.5/10

*deletes from playlist :p *

My recommendations

Ludovico Einaudi - The Waves or you may also find it as le onde (Classical Piano)
The Chemical Brothers - Where Do I Begin (Electronica/Dance)
Mavishnu Orchestra - Meeting Of The Spirits (jazz fusion)

manuscriptreplica 07-27-2004 06:59 PM

Ludovico Einaudi - Le Onde

EDIT: I typed out a fairly long review for this, but it was deleted! So I wrote a much shorter review, unfortunately :(

What a beautiful song. It starts with a arpeggiated run in the left hand, in 6/8 time, and then the right hand starts playing around in the higher register, in crotchets over the left hand. It does this for about half the song: all the key changes and everything, it's awesome. The second part is even more incredible - it is so unbelievably peaceful. A must listen, for anyone. The dynamics, and the whole feel in general make it a very special listen.

I apologise for the short review, but I am happy to give this song a 10/10, and will definately be checking more of his stuff out.

Dragonforce - Disciples of Babylon (Thrash-esque Power Metal)
Regurgitator - G7 Dick Electro Boogie (Electronica/Hip hop)
Gerling - Dust Me Selecta (Electronica/Rock)

lilpete86 07-27-2004 10:26 PM

Still yet to find someone who doesn't like Einaudi

Everyone check him out :thumb:

I'll take dibs on this

pixiesfanyo 07-28-2004 06:35 AM

Dragonforce - Disciples of Babylon

Oh man. This is horrible, I suggest no one dls this. It is just a boring metal song and really shouldn't even be in the Other Music thread. Yuck Yuck Yuck. It's like I've been transported back to LA in the 80s. I hate myself for dling this song.

0.3/10

My Songs:
Falco - Rock Me Amadeus (More Cheesy 80s Synth Shit)
The Dillinger Escape Plan - We are the Storm (Mind fuck)
Fishbone - Party at Ground Zero (Funky Reggae)

Dibs.

Bartender 07-28-2004 03:55 PM

I think I know what to expect :(
Falco - Rock Me Amadeus - 3:15

Starts with a woman's cry of "ooh! rock me amadeus!" with a couple of drum beats, then a male version of it, which repeat many times over.

Singing in a different language! I haven't got a chance of knowing what they're saying, despite the fact I think it's German.

It's pretty much pointless giving a blow-by-blow of this song - you either know what it sounds like or you don't. It's parodied in the Simpsons; "ooh, help me Dr Zaius!"

Let's be honest - it's crap, 80s, synth-drenched gimmick-pop. However, it still gets 10/10, just because it is crap, 80s, synth-drenched gimmick-pop. Besides, it was on the Simpsons.

Songs:
Fantomas - Page 29 (30 second "song" from debut album)
Bruford - Five G (Jazz/fusion)
Massive Attack - Risingson or Angel (trip-hop)

pixiesfanyo 07-28-2004 05:08 PM

It's not in a different langauge Bartender ;)

Bartender 07-28-2004 05:12 PM

Are you sure? I'm picking German words out everywhere. Only english I can hear is "come on and rock me Amadeus".

Maybe two versions?

pixiesfanyo 07-28-2004 05:15 PM

maybe.. but he just talks like he is german

manuscriptreplica 07-28-2004 05:53 PM

Dragonforce .3/10??? ArghhhHhhh! oh well.

-------

Massive Attack - Angel

I love this intro. I think's a low C playing on bass, which is quite low, and gives it a nice little drone feel. Then a cool little electronic drum kit comes in, and all these other cool effects, which give the song an awesome ambience-esque, floaty feel. This random synth plays three notes every so often. Clicking sticks and bongos start playing as well. When all these things are played together, it's quite cool. Then the vocals come in, which I don't particularly enjoy. There's a break in the vocals, and there is a weird, yet cool, thing done to the drums, the hi hat in particular. The next vocal break, there's a cool little guitar solo thing, which is very enjoyable. It's fairly repetitive, with all these random effects and different instruments. I'd write more, but I have to go to college now.

7.5/10 - the vocals, in my opinion let it down a bit. Would of been an excellent instrumental.

-------

Butterfly Effect - Perception Twin (Nu Metal)
Gerling - Dust me Selecta (Electronica/Rock)
Regurgitator - G7 Dick Electro Boogie (Electronica/Hip hop)

I don't know if they will be hard to find or not. If they are, add me to manuscriptreplica on soulseek or manuscriptreplica@hotmail.com, and I can send them to you.

Bartender 07-29-2004 07:47 AM

Apart from the genre description, no idea what to expect.
Regurgitators - G7 Dick Electro Boogie - about 3:20, I think

Starts off with some strange noises, might be distorted vocals, before going into a mid-paced beat rhythm. Vocals come in, low pitched and fast, I can't really make out anything that's being said. Around 0:39 there's some tinkling bells in the background.

Vocals stop, and the tinkling bells are joined by various metallic noises, but not for long, as those low vocals come back in. Different tone of distorted vocals around 1:25, though I've still no idea what they're saying.

Oh wait, I think I picked out "bad karma" around 1:55. Anyway, 2:11 and we're back on those tinkling and metallic noises, but with what could be disc scratching going on as well. It just carries on like this, cycling between the three (low, rushed vocals, tinkly metallics and just beats) until the end, which is very abrupt.

Well it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't particularly good either. Not my kind of thing.

5/10
