My top played artist for last few months.. Some space age texture flipping twisting organic fluidity driving and pulsating syncopated, shifty technological. There I'm done. I got introduced to him a year or two ago by sexxymuffin and have been really inspired by his style in my own beats.

This song was the realization for me, the vocals inspire such cinematic atmospheres, their fluttering through sidechain compression is an essential part of flylo's style. The tune is very complete because it shows two sides of his work, the change up at the end keeps the haunting vocals smoothness while taking a deeper intense view of the scene this is his raw gritty side that still feels articulate and slick.

his albums
2006: "1983"
2008: Los Angeles"
2007 Reset
2008 Los Angeles 1x3
2008 Shhh!
2008 Los Angeles 2x3
July Heat
Raw Cartoons from Adult Swim

Theres are other tracks yeah this is what I know of.

Also, Merry Christmas
This is a great set.

04-02-2009, 06:27 PM
I was listening to Los Angeles last night. It's pretty good but it has no flow inbetween tracks.

04-02-2009, 06:33 PM
thank you noonward.

this is probably my favorite hip hop artist right now. dude has some beautiful samples and is extremely tasteful.

his remix of "a milli" is too sick as well.

04-02-2009, 07:09 PM
My avatar will tell you how I feel about him :D

04-02-2009, 07:40 PM
dude is underrated

04-02-2009, 08:48 PM
los angeles is so good better than 1983 by far

04-02-2009, 11:38 PM
whatever. '1983' is so much better.

he produced a Dilla tribute on the new Finale. i think its his first work with an MC to my knowledge. **** kills.

04-02-2009, 11:40 PM
his remix of "a milli" is legit but I'll be honest, I think I might prefer the original. it's just way more wacko/weirded out and suits Weezy better, IMO.

04-02-2009, 11:55 PM
everyone i know likes massage situation, and most other tracks

i wish i could keep rediscovering him

(*The Noonward Race*)
04-03-2009, 02:38 AM
whatever. '1983' is so much better.

he produced a Dilla tribute on the new Finale. i think its his first work with an MC to my knowledge. **** kills.
Where can I acquire this? Sounds interesting..

Both his albums just different, I like 1983 more maybe but LA is deep in another way.

04-03-2009, 03:18 AM
i can get on AIM.

Apocalyptic Raids
04-03-2009, 04:42 AM
i think reset might be my favourite at the moment

04-03-2009, 04:46 AM
Reset and July Heat are both dope as hell.

04-03-2009, 06:23 AM
whatever. '1983' is so much better.

he produced a Dilla tribute on the new Finale. i think its his first work with an MC to my knowledge. **** kills.

and yeah that track kills

04-03-2009, 06:24 AM
reset is my favourite release of his i think.

last night at lightbox was too sick. the way he plays with beats is amazing, like he played the beat from Archangel by Burial but instead of dropping the whole song he layered some totally different stuff on top. and he threw a total curveball by dropping some Bar 9 dubstep banger which actually fit really in place. and dropped 1983, massage situation, tea leaf dancers... definitely the best dj set i've seen, i love the way his sets are this constantly shifting, creative thing instead of just someone dropping song after song.

04-03-2009, 07:11 AM
downloading july heat currently

Apocalyptic Raids
04-03-2009, 07:44 AM
whats july heat?

04-03-2009, 11:04 AM
comp of his early beats from 2005. a little simpler than what he went on to do, but still great.

anyone heard his set for Radio 1's Essential Mix? it's a pretty killer example of how good his mixing skills are:

(*The Noonward Race*)
04-03-2009, 01:10 PM
yeah man bro lol i posted it in the original post

you're super duper lucky to have seen him tho

04-03-2009, 02:07 PM
totes didn't see that, oops

best thing about it was just how stoked he looked to be dropping every beat haha

04-03-2009, 03:21 PM
I wonder if he tours much. I'd love to see him.

04-03-2009, 03:45 PM
he seems to drop by the UK quite a lot, i'm seeing him in Nottingham next month on an all-nighter bill that includes Samiyam and the Gaslamp Killer

i wish i had caught him last year when he was doing all those shows with The Bug et al though

04-03-2009, 03:54 PM
he is always playing shows in LA

04-03-2009, 06:18 PM
how are the LA EPs?

(*The Noonward Race*)
04-03-2009, 06:21 PM
1x3 is pretty good all new beats and 2x3 is remix by other ppl of his songs thats pretty good too

04-03-2009, 10:23 PM

1x3 is the only one of those EPs I have, it's alright.

04-05-2009, 08:46 PM
I only have Loas Angeles and 1983 at the moment, but they're all I've been listening to lately. So incredibly good, I want to be him. Actually I have Reset as well but I haven't listened yet.

04-17-2009, 04:49 PM

GNG BNG remix is so good.

04-24-2009, 02:59 PM
i got this 12" (digitally) with Declaime by FlyLo. basically two rap tracks produced by FlyLo and three instrumentals. ****ing crazy.

(*The Noonward Race*)
04-24-2009, 09:26 PM
hook a brother up

the only other intended rap track i heard from him was with Blu on youtube

04-24-2009, 09:40 PM

whole wide world needs more plays but it's great stuff

04-26-2009, 02:46 AM
Still just getting into him but I like what I've heard.

(*The Noonward Race*)
04-26-2009, 02:51 AM
i first got into him from chance in 07

remember blazin then going for a walk at 3am putting 1983 on for the first time

04-26-2009, 03:31 AM
chance is cool when he's not tony

(*The Noonward Race*)
04-26-2009, 03:36 AM
chacne is always cool sorry

04-26-2009, 05:29 AM
I like Los Angeles but I haven't heard 1983, gonna download it now.

(*The Noonward Race*)
04-26-2009, 05:34 AM
i think id choose 1983 over LA if had to but i never will so hell yeah

Liberi Fatali
04-26-2009, 05:57 AM
I think I'd mull over it for hours, then finally make a decision before someone mentions "what about Blue Sky Black Death?" and then I would mull over that for even more hours

04-26-2009, 06:55 AM
Just listening to the title track from 1983. Absolutely awesome.

(*The Noonward Race*)
04-26-2009, 07:01 AM

me and my drummer jam on those melodies lol

04-26-2009, 10:42 AM

now looking into the ghostly swim comp

04-26-2009, 11:39 AM
chance? he hasn't overdosed on too many xanny bars or anything?

04-26-2009, 11:46 AM
yeah its been a long time since i talked to that cat

04-26-2009, 12:09 PM
remember when he got his leg crushed by that car randomly.

04-26-2009, 02:31 PM
ha yeah forgot about that. i believe he tried to jaywalk. there is a diagram

05-03-2009, 05:02 PM
that bbc mix is really ****ing good.

(*The Noonward Race*)
05-03-2009, 05:06 PM
yeah its been a long time since i talked to that cat
he comes on to trade tunes once in a while we dont talk as much as we used to tho

05-17-2009, 06:26 PM
i finally decided to download some flylo to check him out and i got july heat...this album is really good. heaps chill
very interesting

05-17-2009, 07:48 PM
the beats are so spacey and minimalist

05-19-2009, 09:54 PM
Man I always come back. Listening to so much Flylo lately, can't stop.

05-19-2009, 10:08 PM
he is the best.

(*The Noonward Race*)
05-19-2009, 10:10 PM
top artist on lastfm this year

05-19-2009, 10:13 PM
The one beat I listened to of yours (19 something?) was heaps Flylo but in an awesome way, not a ripoff way.

(*The Noonward Race*)
05-21-2009, 10:04 AM
which of his album's sound do you guys prefer i mean full length

i like the sound of 1983 it's reallly crunchy and the bass is crazy

Apocalyptic Raids
05-21-2009, 10:41 AM
LA. to me 1983 has always sounded a little flat in comparison. the songs are just as good, but LA's sound is so... big (or maybe it's just louder? idk). either way, the synths on brainfeeder give me a boner.

05-21-2009, 12:04 PM
la feels like a time warp and 1983 feels like you're just on a ride going forwards except with fuzzy glorious synth patterns like how la feels a little modern but you can already shape the idea of his la and his city

05-21-2009, 01:58 PM
i like '1983' because it works as an album. 'LA' has weak tracks.

whenever i saw him live he remixed 'Poppin' My Collar'

05-21-2009, 02:06 PM
both album and sound wise, i go back and forth a lot

(*The Noonward Race*)
05-21-2009, 03:19 PM
i think the coolest thing he does is live drum solos

**** at like around 3:18 is masteful

05-21-2009, 05:54 PM

05-21-2009, 08:06 PM
I think I prefer 1983, but only marginally. Depends on my mood.

I think I might be starting to like Reset better than both though, just so good.

(*The Noonward Race*)
05-21-2009, 08:42 PM
yep but the eps don't really hav album like narratives with the songs and sounds

05-24-2009, 12:44 PM
im not exactly sure but i think on la he must have used more selective multiband compressions the sounds are more isolated than 1983

i said 1983 because its total cohesive crunch is simpler, imparting more rawness of his own vision which of course it is because its his debut, but i like his inner game most i think really i'm just describing what i think of each piece

LA is another beast, more of a whole planet with alien life that will take time to explore while 1983 will grind on your and soul bring you up

09-29-2009, 09:19 PM
I saw him a couple months ago and the show was phenomenal. He genuinely looks like he enjoys every minute he plays and the textures and layers of his set created an aural landscape that made it seem like i was in a thick, space-age goop. I talked to him afterwards about crystals, DMT and sleep paralysis, he's a pretty metaphysical dude.

I found the most incredible track with madlib/quasimoto rapping over a dilla inspired, fly lo dubstep beat. delicious.

(*The Noonward Race*)
09-29-2009, 11:01 PM
with madlib/quasimoto rapping over a dilla inspired, fly lo dubstep beatdope to the dope

09-29-2009, 11:51 PM
listening to this artist atm

09-29-2009, 11:54 PM
I've been pulling Los Angeles out a lot lately, sick album.

09-29-2009, 11:57 PM
p inconsistent but there's some hot joints on it

(*The Noonward Race*)
09-30-2009, 12:02 AM
i have to look at it as one idea i mean theres a tenseness or something is in every track

it's a trip

09-30-2009, 12:40 AM
One of the best aspects is that it is so consistent

09-30-2009, 08:02 AM
I agree, one of the best albums I've heard in my life

09-30-2009, 11:35 AM
i actually only have 1983

it's good

Six Foot Revolver
09-30-2009, 12:13 PM
i prefer 1983 but you should definitely get los angeles

09-30-2009, 01:30 PM
it's very cohesive but it's not consistent rly

09-30-2009, 05:00 PM
it's not cohesive at all what are you talking about

(*The Noonward Race*)
09-30-2009, 06:05 PM
compared to 1983 or his eps

(*The Noonward Race*)
02-18-2010, 11:23 AM

02-22-2010, 07:04 PM
Excited for Cosmogramma, even though I think FlyLo is a little over-rated.

Also, Brainfeeder curated Fabric in London soon, featuring;

Flying Lotus (Brainfeeder, Warp, Los Angeles)
Kode9 (Hyperdub, London)
The Gaslamp Killer (Brainfeeder, Low End Theory, Los Angeles)
Martyn (3024, Washington DC)
Dorian Concept (Kindred Spirits, Vienna)
Dimlite (Now-Again, Bern)
Daedelus (Brainfeeder, Ninja Tune, Los Angeles)
Nosaj Thing (Brainfeeder, Alpha Pup, Los Angeles)
TOKiMONSTA (Brainfeeder, Los Angeles)
