HURRRRR READ THESE RULES OR DIE

Okay, after a bit of time off from polls and stuff, we have a new competition up in R&M. This is a pretty popular category and it's sure to cause a lot of controversy and heartbreak, but I'm going to do it anyway because everyone loves clicking on polls.

Singers... frontmen... screamers, growlers, etc. all have been used to describe the guy or girl in a rock or metal band who uses the greatest and most versatile instrument of all: the human voice. This thread should be full of nominations and I'll try to count them up as best as I can. There aren't too many rules against certain people, but here are some:

1. Rappers are okay IF the music going on behind them is rock/metal and the musicians playing it are credited as band members instead of just the rapper. This leaves room for only one real standout (*coughRATMcough*) but if you can think of others then that's fine too. Beastie Boys don't count because they rarely played any instruments, not like the full-time "band" unit that De La Rocha, Morello, Wilk and Commerford enjoyed.

2. Rock and Metal vocalists only.

3. You can nominate as many as you want, but you have to have AT LEAST FIFTEEN nominated to count all of them. I came up with 100 nominations to give you ideas, and http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com has a neat list too. You can't just copy theirs because that's plagiarism and there's no way you actually believe their list and aren't just being lazy.

4. Don't whine about my list, it's not in order and it's just a list of nominees. If you don't like it then make your own. I'm aware that Ozzy isn't on there, and I'm fine with that.

5. This is to judge a person's vocal talents and not their stage presence (see Ozzy comment). Not everyone can see every vocalist listed in a live setting, so it would be unfair to expect you to judge them based on it. But if you saw a good vocalist live, then chances are he's good all-around and you shouldn't have any shame listing him. You can even list Ozzy if you want but I just happen to disagree with you on that.

6. I should have clarified this earlier, but no backup singers. Just the lead vocalist in a band, unless for some reason they have two (not like SOAD but maybe some supergroups from the 70s did this).

7. Don't be a faggot. You know who you are.

Okay next post is my nominees. Have fun!

THEN NOMINATE THEM DAMMIT The vocalists with the most nominations are the ones who get into the polls, simple as that.

Off the top of my head:

James Hetfield
Chris Cornell
Eddie Vedder
Sammy Hagar
Dave Draiman
Mats Leven
Kurt Cobain
Sting
Johnny Lang
Seal
Layne Staley
There's a lot. I'll get back to this one

Seal is an R&B singer, you can't fool me. I mean, so is Sting now, sort of, so I guess I should only count his career in The Police :-/

Ian, I think it'd be a good idea if you size 7 bolded something like this: Please keep all nominations in one post, and if you're going to correct someone who is doing something wrong, please do so, but once they fix it, please delete your post, as it will make counting the votes a lot easier. (And the thread will nicer as well. :))

YD, are we going on vocal talent and stage presence?

Stage presence is irrelevant to this contest. Otherwise Maynard would be in a sorry position since he just sort of cowers in a dark corner behind the drummer, dressed in funny costumes. I don't think it works, especially since his voice is too good to be brought down by taking his stage presence into consideration.

Let's just leave it alone for now.

Wow, there are a lot of names I've never heard before. Mostly Scandinavian, because I don't find anything unique about the hordes of death/black metal vocalists. Although I'm sure I would make my vocal chords die if I attempted any of their tricks :(

Once you listen to alot of DM, you notice the differences.

Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden)
Dick Valentine (Electric Six)
Ihsahn (Emperor)
Garm (Arcturus, Ulver)
ICS Vortex (Borknagar, Arcturus)
Vintersorg (Vintersorg, Borknagar)

Friden did vocals for Skydancer, DT's first full length, among other earlier stuff.

Would you like some ice for that burn? :p
Uhm, that's not a burn. I'm perfectly aware that he was correct, technically speaking. But Mikael Stanne is the Dark Tranquillity vocalist, and he didnt mention that.

So popular music can't be rock now? Pop ROCK is not rock? Yeah, you make a lot of sense.

I never said it wasn't rock. I said at best she is pop-rock, which can be included. However, she is not rock. Popular music and pop are no longer the synonyms they once were. Pop is now vocally driven, rock is instrumentally driven. Stop being such a rebel.

This "chickenshit loophole" as you so astutely put it would allow The Roots in this competition, I think. Whether or not they advance is another story, but yeah, Black Thought should count.

Yeah, but the opening post stipulates that it's only if the music in the background is "rock or metal" and that the format "leaves room for only one real standout", which makes me suspicious.

The Roots aren't that far from old school rock, so i think their vocalist should be at least nominated.

They are like a soft version of Rage without the political lyrics.

Correct.

The point I'm driving home here is go ahead and nominate him, as it wouldn't hurt anything.

However, if he doesn't get any votes besides from you, oh well.

No one is going to be up in arms over his nomination.

Yeah, but the opening post stipulates that it's only if the music in the background is "rock or metal" and that the format "leaves room for only one real standout", which makes me suspicious.

I couldn't think of any other bands except RATM to which that rule might apply. But it looks like you did, so maybe someone else will nominate that guy too.

Lord Worm (cryptopsy)
Garm (arcturus)

Reggae is not rock or metal. Although each genre was certainly influenced to an extent by the other, they really aren't the same at all.

Hey man you are a great organizer for these deals, but I really do grow tired of having to have your opinion shoved down my throat in each round of the contest. I mean in the bassist poll, you did some shoddy research for most of the bassists you didn't like, and even organized that whole thing to get rid of Mike Dirnst (I didn't like him either but you're kind of tweaking the contest there)
That and you complained about people voting for punk bassists such as Dirnt and Simonon in a Rock and Metal poll, and yet just now you nominated the vocalists from Dead Kennedys and Reel Big Fish respectively. These are not rock or metal bands (I base this on the fact that this is not the forum they are commonly discussed in) so I do not understand why you are breaking one of your own rules here.

Just my thoughts.

I am a participant in this competition as well. I have my nominations (one hundred of them, which was pretty tough) and I vote in the polls same as anyone else. Therefore, I am entitled to my opinion since it does not interfere with the impartiality of the vote tallying. There's a difference between me saying "Stop voting for Kurt Cobain because he was a horrible vocalist" and "Hmm I seem to have not put Kurt Cobain on the list even though he had enough votes."

Also, the reason Mike Dirnt was not in the next round of the bassists competition is because he is a pop bassist. Not punk, and not even pop-punk! Green Day is a pop band so I wouldn't expect to see votes for Billie Joe to be counted either, although genuine punk bands like DK (and pop-punk bands that some people mislabel as emo) are perfectly fine.

Rats!

My top three better make it!!

Green Day is a pop band so I wouldn't expect to see votes for Billie Joe to be counted either, although genuine punk bands like DK (and pop-punk bands that some people mislabel as emo) are perfectly fine.

That's dumb. With that logic singers from bands like the beatles shouldn't be accepted, or the cure, or the police etc.

Green Day is acceptable

You nominated Kurt Cobain. With logic like that, Aaron Lewis, Fred Durst, Jon Davis, or the guy from Silverchair should be on your list because they're all horrible too.

Green Day is a pop band, not just a popular rock band. Same thing with Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, Blink 182, Avril Lavigne... basically I'm trying to make a division between pop and punk, not pop and popular rock bands.

I'm just saying if you draw the line at green day you would have to take Lennon, Sting, Bono, McCartney etc... off lists as well.

Sting's solo career is not rock nor metal, but The Police were at least punk. And The Beatles moved farther AWAY from disposable pop than when they started, while Green Day is going in just the opposite direction.

Bono is a dork, but U2 started out as sort of the post-punk band that I allowed to be nominated anyway, so eh.

Basically, you're eligible for this contest if you're popular AND the band you're in started out as a regular old rock/metal band. If it started out as a punk band and remained a punk band, that's also okay, but if they became first pop-punk, THEN pop, then you're outta luck :(

Hetfield is where it's at. he may not be the best singer, but he is THE BEST RHYTHM GUITARIST IN A TWO-GUITAR BAND TO EVER WALK THE FACE OF THE EARTH.

No he isn't. I can't think of someone empirically better right now, but the fact that you think there is such a clear winner in such a broad category is enough to earn a mocking.

Oh wait I got one, Dave Mustaine. Or maybe Scott Ian, not too sure.

Mats Levén (Therion, and Yngwie, apparently)

He's a really cool guy...I talked with him for a while after the Therion show I went to a few weeks ago. Hell of a frontman/performer as well...just what Therion needed, IMO. My jaw nearly hit the floor when they performed Typhon live....for the choruses (on the album version, originally two tracks of CHris grunting), Chris did a kind of low growl while Mats did a really high pitched Halfordesque scream, harmonizing...kinda. It ****ing ruled. :D

I completely respect your right to an opinion but I just would rather suggest that you let your opinions be known in the thread just like the rest of us rather than in the same post that is explaining the rules for a certain round, etc. Hey you don't like Ozzy? thats cool with me but you could certainly have found a better place to let your opinion be known rather than the Rules for the nomination thread.
I also do not see the purpose of allowing punk vocalists into this competition. They are not discussed in this forum so I do not see there place in a polling of this particular forum.

And that's why Green Day is hailed as one of the most populair pop punk/punk rock bandm and there album won the poll in the pop punk thread ...

The thing is, it's your opinion, and that was a wrong one, Green Day is not a pop band listen to their first albums, and even AI is not pop, it's pop rock ...

And you see U2 as post punk and The Police as punk, well I would simply classified both as rock ... But opinions hea ;)

This argument is stupid, there's no way Billie Joe Armstrong shouldn't be counted, just as with Mike Dirnt in the bassists poll. If people vote for him he deserves to be there.

I will certainly not be voting for him though, I can't stand his voice.

The Monkees did sing their own songs.

My mistake. I knew they didn't play their own instruments, so I assumed they didn't sing either. Oh well, there's one nomination for him I guess.

Also, people need to stop nominating Johnny Cash because he's very obviously a country singer. A really good one with an awesome voice, but not quite eligible for the competition. I'm also confused by Dylan's nominations; he's eligible but not very good at all, more of a great lyricist. But whatever, can't do anything about that.

The thing is that while Dylan's voice isn't astheticly pleasing to some, he is still a good vocalist, and I find some of his styles very difficult to replicate

Well, to be fair, he's also more of a folk musician than "rock," per say.

He started off closer to folk (Bob Dylan, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, The Times They Are A-Changin') but moved (Bringing It All Back Home) very definitely into rock (Blood on the Tracks, Desire, Blonde on Blonde).

I really like Dylan's voice, though moreso on his earlier stuff than later. Often mostly for the fact that he had an incredibly rough voice for a young man.

I wanna make a poll whose sole purpose is to close in a certain number of days, which would signify the end of the nominating period.

However, I think it would also be neat to have an option in the poll which says "BY CLICKING THIS OPTION I HEREBY DISQUALIFY ALL OF MY NOMINATIONS" just to weed out the idiots at an early stage. There would be no obligation to click it and it would be your own fault if you did so. You don't even have to touch the poll at all so there should be no accidents of any sort.

If you can tell me why this would be a bad idea, then go ahead and give it a try. I'll probably do it anyway, but only your convincing could stop me from actually following through with the DQ-ing of idiots.

You'd be surprised! Haven't you ever seen any of Trilemma's "post here and you will be banned" threads? Or whenever a mod in R&M made a new rules thread, there was a poll asking if you agree to the rules, and if you clicked "no" then it stated very clearly that you would be banned.

People click on these things anyway because they're dumb! And that's who I want to avoid in this competition thingy!
