Zelda was an influential all-female Japanese rock band that first formed in 1979. Unlike other popular female-oriented acts atthe
time, the group itself was particularly praised, initially for their impressive musical skill and knack at blending mature tribal-like
instrumentation with semi-pop wailing from frontwoman Sayoko Takahashi. They were also noted for their unique sound, which
eventually spanned out to include elements of avant-garde, post-punk, progressive rock, world music, new wave, reggaeand pop
rock. In 1996, after nearly two decades together, Zelda officially disbanded, but remain one of the most significant all-female
bands in Japanese music history.
