How Like a Winter are a gothic doom metal band formed during the late 1990s in Campobasso, Italy. After the 2001 demo "The Winter's Near", the band released their first LP "...Beyond My Grey Wake" in 2003 via Martyr Music Group, which was met with highly favorable reviews.According to guitarist Mist, both My Dying Bride and Anathema provide the band a source of inspiration.The name of the band is taken from the first line of Shakespeare's Sonnet 97: "How like a winter hath my absence been".
