And that isolation has allowed the band to steerclear of trends.Zao’s original incarnation formed in the mid-90s withevangelical zeal. When that version of the band fell apart,Zao as itwouldcome tochangethecourse of heavymusic was born. Recently hailed by Alternative Press as“one of the mostimportantalbums of 1998, Where BloodandFire BringResttook the conventions of hardcore andheavy metal and turned themupsidedown.When Scott Mellinger joined Zao for the following year’sLiberate te ex Inferis, it began a song-writing partnershipwithWeyandtthat persiststothisday. Self-Titled waswritten and recorded by Dan, Scott and Jesse Smith (theonly remainingholdover from thepre-B&F days) andfeaturedavastamount of experimentation withelectronics, dark soundscapes, andmelodic interludes.“Five YearWinter” continues to be one ofZao’smostpopularsongs in the live setting.The triocreatedParade Of Chaos together as well,pushing theenvelope even further.Zao’s first album for Ferret Music, The Funeral of God,was recorded as a five-piece with producer Eric Rachel(Atreyu, EveryTime IDie).Thealbumbecame Zao’sbiggest selling record and saw them receive their firstairplay on MTV2 andFuseandmajor pressaccolades.After tours with bands like Bleeding Through andDillinger Escape Plan, the band – now Dan, Scott, MartyLunn (bass) andJeffGretz (drums) –recorded The FearIs What Keeps Us Here with Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies,Neurosis) manning the reel-to-reel. Next they hit the roadwithInFlames,Trivium, Demon Hunter & Throwdown.Dan, Scott, Marty and Jeff reconvened for Awake?, theirfirst album of new material in three years. The recordwasproducedandengineeredalmostentirely by Scott inPennsylvania, with Daniel Castleman and As I Lay Dyingvocalist TimLambesisproducingdrums in SouthernCalifornia andhandlingthe mixing.
