The Mars Volta

Formed in 2001 after the demise of the Post Hardcore whirlwind At The Drive-In by ex-members Cedric Bixler-Zavala(vocals) and Omar Rodríguez-López (guitar), who then recruited Juan Alderete on bass, Ikey Owens on keyboard, and Jon Theodore on drums, as well as Jeremy Ward, who contributed sound effects to their first album before unfortunately passing away shortly before the release of the record. Whilst other ex-members of At The Drive-In continued on the path of the former band with punk/Emogroup Sparta, The Mars Volta expanded their sonic pallette, often venturing into extended free jazz and psychedelic jamming throughout their songs. After releasing 6 studio records 11 years into their career, the band took a hiatus in 2012 out of growing feuds within some the bandmembers. By the next year, in January 2013, the band officially disbanded. « hide
