Boogie Down Productions

Boogie Down Productions was a hip hop group from South Bronx, NYC, originally comprised of emcees KRS-One and D-Nice, and DJ Scott La Rock. The name of the group, Boogie Down, derives from a nickname for the cultural Bronx, one of the five boroughs of New York City. The group pioneered the fusion of dancehall reggae, deep philosophical lyricism and traditional hip hop music, and their debut LP, "Criminal Minded", contained frank descriptions of life in the South Bronx of the late 1980's, thus helping to set the stage for what would eventually become gangsta rap. Boogie Down Production's D-Nice also discovered white rapper and current rocker Kid Rock in 1987, helping him to get a deal with Jive Records in 1988. DJ Scott La Rock was murdered on August 27, 1987, months after the release of BDP's debut album, "Criminal Minded". This caused much disarray in the lineup of Boogie Down Productions, with only KRS-One remaining as a core original member. In 1992, after years of internal confusion regarding the group's whereabouts, Boogie Down Productions finally disbanded. « hide
