Review Summary: “old, not obsolete” - some old guy.

There’s less nu-/new these days for Soulfly. Age old thrashing returns for their billionth album, Totem, and this time they’re coming in hot… again. However, there is one fatal flaw in their grey bearded tactics: they have less ability to see without wearing reading glasses. That would make reading sheet music quite a chore. Still, that doesn’t stop the ancient band from engaging in curb-stomping bullying in the form of metallic chugs, even if their riffs sound like their gun being shot at kids that refused to get off Soulfly’s lawn. Totem isn’t a return to roots, bloody roots, but it’s a declaration they can still kick it with the young bucks, even if they can’t jump da *** up as high as they used to. Their knees might give out. Boom!

Their prehistoric attack is well known. Punishingly heavy riffs couple with the old man’s yell-growling, the type he uses to demand someone to bring the remote to him, and also his reading glasses to see the tv. In his antique age he still sounds very angry, like his son lost his remote and he’s gonna kick his ass. The rage in his voice is still awesome, and while I don’t condone parental abuse, I do condone abusive riffage. Indeed, the riffs slam your fingers in car doors the entire album, which is musically acceptable. Soulfly are certainly back to the primitive thrashy clashes, the good old smashin’ spastics, and classic ass kicks - that’s it.

Soulfly may be beating a dead horse, but they’re doing it with the dedication of The United States Navy. Soulfly are as consistent as ever, and they haven’t missed a step, even though walking tires them out. They’re even throwing in some ultra tier guitar solos in the mix, and while their hands may hurt from repeated use, they can clearly still use their fingers to slowly reach for a knitting magazine, or play guitar well. They can also growl like an ancient god encased in stone, awaking from a slumber that began at the beginning of time. The production is excellent, the heaviness is soul crushing, and Soulfly are back doing the same old thing. Get off your rocking chair and grab the nearest headphones, there is still more hearing damage left to be done.

Great review, I can't wait to get to this. I'm a sucker for some Soulfly. Glad this is being generally well received even though Rizzo is gone. His absence really made me worry about this album

Well what do you know? Turns out not cranking out albums at a high rate can do good things to your creativity! Actually excited to jam to this, especially how solid their last one was.

Well he still is churning albums out at a high rate, just not as high as before and the side projects are more collaborative. CavCon is on a break but KBK (2020) gives Greg, Troy and Ben more songwriting which takes it in a more progressive direction. Go Ahead and Die (2021) was done with Igor Amadeus Cavalera writing the majority of material. Does mean he's had 4 years to save up material for Soulfly though. It's just his album-per-year approach has relaxed to let the young'uns carry some of the weight.

Judging by the singles, the album may be more thrashy than their usual stuff, which if true, would be cool.

Don’t have time to read right now, so I would appreciate it if someone wrote a post about the sound work, because Arthur Rizk did it, and because his work with the new Kreator album sounded subpar to his usual standards.

Edit:

Skimmed through the text after all, and it says production is excellent, but still, whoever can elaborate, please do so.

It has breakdowns. It thrashes hard consistently. The old man has echoey-ish vocals like a Neanderthal in a cave. The album doesn’t get boring.

a 4? come on man, these riffs are absurdly awful and cookie-cutter. like half the riffs here either are on other albums, note for note, or are so mind numbingly dumb/primitive that other musicians wouldn’t dare put them on a record.

You’d think you’d be more down with this type of shit considering you 5’d Toxicity. Ah well, your loss.

Rizk uses a lot more whammy dives in his solos than Rizzo did. Very Slayer-esque.
