Review Summary: Would you be mad if I screamed? Would you be mad if I followed my dreams?
Cake Pop, a group led by now (in some circles) well-known 100 gecs' male half Dylan Brady, put out a debut album some time ago. This isn't the first time something was released under the Cake Pop moniker, as there was a self-titled EP released in 2015, hence (I guess) why the album is dubbed "Cake Pop 2". Is this project just an appetizer while we wait for more gecs or is it truly something noteworthy? Yes to both of those things.
This album does sound like one half of 100 gecs, albeit a more focused one. Yes, the crazy clashing of genres is still here and the autotune vocals are as well, but we're dealing with one half of a crazy duo here (and the help of some friends). The album opener π΅ππΆπΈπ π
ππ starts off with an amazing zany sounding synth, followed by Dylan and company "rapping" about daddy's drugs, happy socks, and fear of the dentist. This song sounds the least like gecs in my opinion, as it doesn't really go all out in terms of noise. Nonetheless, it does quench a hyper-pop sized thirst. After that, the album likes to throw ideas we're already acquainted with our way, but with some new genre clashing to keep it interesting.
This record only clocks in at around 20 minutes, so the "in-your-face"-iness of Cake Pop/100 gecs doesn't cause any exhaustion. It's simply more and somewhat expanded gecs, and that, in the end, leaves me more than satisfied, while also patiently waiting for more. Yes Dylan, I too am very happy with a bit of sin.
