Review Summary: Black metal punk done right

Skeleton waste no time cutting right into their first full-length. The Austin, Texas based act has put out a handful of demos and their Pyramid Of Skull EP over the last few years. Their self titled LP is their first release with the currently dominating 20 Buck Spin, a label whose output I am always down to check out. Skeleton fit right at home among their roster.

‘Skeleton’ starts the record going between black metal blasts and pogo beats. The best way to describe this record is Venom meets Discharge. There’s enough first wave black metal influence throughout this record to please any fan of said genre. ‘At War’ starts with some somber, yet, evil riffing before charging into a total onslaught.

The group’s greatest strength is being able to navigate through punk and metal so seamlessly. At 27 minutes long the songs do not stick around long enough to become stale. The album closer ‘Catacombs,’ is probably the most black metal influenced song on the record, even sounding somewhat melodic in its approach. The song leaves you with the feeling of descending further into darkness as the record envelops around you.

For this to be a debut full-length leaves me excited with what Skeleton can do as a band. The evil nature of black metal fused together with the power and speed of punk is such an interesting combination that is tricky to pull off. The only complaint is that the artwork just kinda sucks. This is a record that demands to be played front to back as loud as possible, maybe even in a basement or cave.

I feel guilty the review is short, but man this record kicks ass I really don't have to many gripes with it.

this band played our most DIY venue about 2 years ago and hid behind satanic curtains and fog machines the whole time, has kind of a culty following here now

Jammed this, liked it enough but by the time it was over, felt like none of it really stuck. Will have to spin it a few more times for rating. Not bad, though.

This review was a bit short imo, maybe a few more pharagraphs about their sound would be nice.

This fucking slaps m/ I love all the old-school influences, and the raw energy!

Maybe it was just me, but I think has a "blackened Power Trip" vibe - and interestingly both bands are from Texas...

Taste of Blood and Ring of Fire were my favorites. This is super solid if not a bit disposable.

This rips. Can see the comparison with Devil Master, those growls from the underworld.

Good review, but it didn't do as much for me as it did for you. Felt pretty much like a 3-3.5 dm album (hardcore punk? I don't think so) until Catacombs came on. Catacombs is a SOTY candidate. If these guys can lean into that atmo-black vibe even more, they'll stand out from the crowd. Otherwise, there are a lot of bands doing the same thing a lot better, imo.

This just takes me back. Been a metalhead all my life and of course grew up to old school metal like many have. Which is why this one really speaks out to me.

Revisiting now cause I forgot to rate it. Solid riffing but it's gonna be a 3.5 me thinks :/
