Review Summary: If it ain't broke, don't fix it Auras, like most shoegaze, is music most interested in painting broad, indistinct strokes rather than losing itself in small details. Across the twelve tracks of their debut full-length album, Deafcult create music that invites such generic shoegaze descriptors as “ethereal” and “dreamy”, and their color palette consists of familiar bright pink. And indeed Auras is far from the most creative example of its style; however, this comfort works to its strength, not its detriment. Deafcult set out with a clear goal in mind and execute it excellently. As such, with Auras, what you see is what you get: four gorgeously layered guitars swirl and riff, some clean and pure, some distorted; drums pound, provide momentum, gently carry you from section to section; alternating female and male vocals float up out of the mix, simultaneously suggesting both depths untold and nothing at all. Occasionally a guitar riff sounds a bit too reminiscent of something from Loveless, but you don’t care, because you’re engrossed in the mood and, well, it sounds great anyways. Occasionally Deafcult pull out a surprise, such as the synthesized textures and beats of tracks like “Urusai” and “Echoes”, or the breezy acoustic strums of “Summertime”, providing needed bits of variety without completely derailing the album’s atmosphere. Like the music itself, the titles are vague and, you know what, probably meaningless, suggesting cosmic battles, arcane knowledge, youth, nostalgia, and girls. Auras is an experience that doesn’t lend itself so well to close analysis, but that’s not what its purpose is. Put it on, play it loud, and lose yourself in its atmosphere — I dare you not to have a smile on your face by the time the “Soon”-inspired dance beats of closer “Here Be Death” find their way into your headphones.

Was kinda stuck between a 3.5 and a 4 but as I was writing I convinced myself to lean more positive, album makes me feel all warm and fuzzy

Great review, I’ll check this and see if this deafcult can take me to...deaf heaven?
Four guitar players?
| | | I may give this a listen
Good review Boney, maybe slightly short but convincing for sure
| | | I prefer their debut EP, which had much more punch. Good album though.

Thanks Doof, hope you enjoy. I'd be happy with a 3 from you, knowing how you go with this kind of stuff.
Yeah Azer it's a tad short but I feel it gets across pretty much everything I wanted to.
Rasi, just tried that EP, it's def a bit different than this so I can see why one might prefer that.

Boney, nearly finished my first spin...yeah, somewhere between a 3 and a 3.5.
Nearly every memorable riff here is sadly super familiar. Overall sound is decent though.
Kind of got a shoegaze rec for you based on this, bit more alt rock - My Vitriol 'Finelines'. You might like at least some of it, esp the instrumental work. Vocals are a bit cheesier...but at least more distinct than here ;D

Fair fair, yeah I agree about the riffs, I'm probably overrating it a tad (as I said above I had it at a 3.5 myself until I finished the review) but it's just been really working for me this week
The vocals are actually a highlight for me here, yeah they're doing the kind of generic shoegaze indistinct thing but they're done as well here as I've heard anywhere else
I've heard of that album, don't think it made it onto my rec list though, I'll keep it in mind once I finish my 2017 binge

I put it on your RYM account so you don't forget ;P
Seriously it is worth a listen for some truly thunderous guitar work, a bit more punchy and dramatic than a lot of shoegaze.
I like the vocals here actually, I was just saying the My Vitriol the vocals are more alt - quite feminine alt for male vocals though.
I'll prob return to this album, think it'll have some highlights worth downloading for sure.
| | | Nice bonester review... i should check
I find reviewing an album usually bumps my opinion of it. You sorta get to know it better. Like the breakfast club or something
