4.0 excellent | 3eyedjohnny | October 17th 16 | Finally! Hardcore/punk should not have its collective head stuck up the butt of politicians and unfortunately it does. There is no freedom in being controlled by the government and Porcupine gets it. Too many bands now are just mouth-pieces of liberal worldview -- and listeners are convinced they are being rebellious --- please. rIf you have an open mind and like hard driving music then you will like this release. If you are narrow-minded and a groupie for the government...well go back to Lady Gaga and Miley. rRecording quality could be improved and hopefully their next release will be. rGood stuffs!

1.0 awful | heck | October 17th 16 | Sloppily-performed and abysmally-produced even by DIY standards, secondhand embarrassment is the name of the game with Porcupine's debut EP. The band's handful of supporters will be quick to highlight the "controversy" over their lyrical themes as a sign of great things, but the real problem lies less with the band's subject matter and more with the fact that each song reads like a collection of cringe-worthy catchphrases and strung-together buzzwords that are far too poorly-written to be either shocking or thought-provoking. Even ignoring the argument to be made that representing an overtly traditionalist mindset is by definition the opposite of "punk", State of the Union is simply too stereotypical, heavy-handed, one-dimensional and confrontational to be intellectually challenging. A word to the wise: if you want to upset the status quo, this is not the way to do it.
