That sounds about right. This is a thoroughly enjoyable record either way, it's not as cohesive or consistent as Jane but that's a masterpiece & it would be unfair to dismiss this based on those standards.

I can't even remember what the debut is like, honestly.

I'd say the second half of this album is much more fleshed out than the first. Aside from the first 4 tracks, I don't really see anything as half baked on here. Plagues, Orphaned, and Trophy Scars are some of my favorite Converge songs.

You 5'd it, so obviously you're not gonna think anything feels half baked lol. A lot of the songs feel like they meander around and go nowhere, as if they wrote the songs and practiced them a few times and then threw them down on the tape, instead of tinkering and polishing them up to be as concise and hard hitting as possible.

Ya, case in point, Grim Heart. That song doesn't in any way justify that length.

And lonewolves doesn't get nearly enough love. That track is probably my favorite off this.

This is prob my least favorite album by them (aside from halo obv)

I don’t think the album is weak at all. It starts fast as hell, slows to a crawl and then builds the momentum back up to smash you in the face numerous times again before it ends

I don't always enjoy it, but undoubtably this is the 'verge release above all others that still sounds utterly disorienting to me, and that's cool

I'd say there's tracks with really special moments here. That's this album strength imo. f.e. - To the Lions ending, Trophy Scars bridge, Grim Heart/ Black Rose outro. It took me a bit to get into those first 5 tracks but Hellbound is a fuckin banger. Every track here has its interest imo

A question to all you Converge lovers, which band(s) have you come across that come the closest to replicating their sound? I don't want straight up plagiarism, but as close as possible without borrowing all their riffs/songs.

Any ideas?
