I completely agree with the review. Van Halen is one of my favorite bands and i probably listen to them about 4 hours a day on average and this is by far my favorite album. Well, maybe not by far 5150 is pretty good too. Anyway, i was shocked to find out the reaction to the album. apparently Van Halen doesn't even list it on their discography, which is too bad. it is haunting and beautiful. the depth and originality of just about every song on this album is unparallelled by any other album they have ever made. Pure Genius. 10/10

I totally disagree with this review. III might be a good album, but definitely not in the same league as their David Lee Roth era output. Or Hell, not even in the same league as some of their other stuff with Hagar.

have to disagree with this review. This album was not very good. And did not have much going for it. I like Van Halen 1984 was perhaps the best album they came out with. This album so good stuff in it like Without You and Fire in the Hole. The rest of the album is disjointed and not what fans wanted. And if your fans don't like it then you leave them not buying it. This eventually led to a great band demise and we haven't heard anything from them since. I agree Eddie Van Halen's guitar work on this album is some of the best stuff he has done. But the songs and music overall left me as a listener confused and not really appreciating anything.

If 'Van Halen III' is to be the Californian quartet's final album, then it would be a terribly disappointing way to go out, since their 11th LP is filled with dated, nondescript hard-rock. Extreme's Gary Cherone takes over on lead vocals, but simply comes off as a poor man's Sammy Hagar. It is not all his fault though as these are hookless tunes which fade from memory as soon as they are over. There are some decent parts here & there (usually Eddie's guitar-work), but locating them through the sub-par production & overlong 66 minute duration is a chore. The horrid Eddie sung closer says it all. Recommended Tracks: One I Want & Without You.

I really understand not rating this low...there are a lot of good moments on it...it's definitely a listenable record, and in many ways it's better than the popular rendition of Van Halen...but is it really a classic record just because it's better than what most people claim it to be? I guess for you it really could be, but if you asked me that, I would definitely say "no, I guess it still isn't..." It's almost a 4 though, so there's something to be admired for sure.

For some reason I just love this record. It sounds like nothing they had ever done before. Cherone really brought some interesting song ideas to the table. Rumour has it that the band recorded a complete 2nd studio album with Cherone but Warner Brothers knocked it back. A damn shame, oh well this lineup just wasn't meant to be I guess.

The reviewer doesn't seem to know that Van Halen itself (i.e. Eddie and Alex) have disavowed this album and Gary Cherone in general.
It's true. Go to Van Halen's webpage. Aside from the photoshopping out of Michael Anthony from the album covers, the most striking thing about the site is the complete lack of acknowledgement of an album called Van Halen III or of a band member who goes by the name of Gary Cherone.
In any case, the reviewer seems to be comparing VH III to the Van Hagar era. In that light, this isn't a horrible album. It's about par for the course.
But when compared to the DLR-era albums (even with the inclusion of the absolutely horrible Diver Down), these songs get tossed into the scrap pile.
Finally, when a reviewer uses expressions like "neat and interesting guitar playing" and "unique and interesting stuff" when referring to EVH, s/he's really just saying: I don't know much about the electric guitar but I've heard that Eddie is pretty good, so I'll write something to that effect in the text.
