The highs of this album are greater than Hot Fuss and it's a more solid listen overall. Definitely has half of their top ten greatest songs, but When You Were Young is easily not in the top ten.

This whole album is incredibly nostalgic for me. It came out in the Autumn of my freshman year of college (not trying to date myself here, oh well), and I just remember jamming it nonstop on my headphones as I walked around the college town familiarizing myself with my surroundings. It was late September so I hadn't made all that many friends yet besides my roommate, so I spent a lot of time going to my local CD/record shop. That same fall I got MCR's Black Parade and I love that album for a lot of the same reasons lol. Just goes to show how monumental our personal lives are in determining our appreciation for music. For me, a lot of the time, the music is only as good as the memories I have with it. Something can be technically astounding but if I don't attach myself to it in a meaningful way (which is almost impossible to tell in the moment - I certainly didn't know it with this record either), then it's largely a moot point.

SowingSeason, I agree with that observation. I enjoy listening to a lot of stuff that isn't good (significantly worse than this album, in fact), and stuff which I normally wouldn't listen to, simply because of the associated memories and emotions; so I fully understand your 5 star rating.

Thanks. I know it's a pretty generic observation but it's defined my entire time on this site. Memories/personal appeal is everything.

Just finished my first refresher on this in years. I like it way more than I initially did. Prefer it to Hot Fuss when looking at the total package. However, I still find this a bit inconsistent. Nothing too bad, a few 3s and then the only track I'd say I didn't really like was Read My Mind
Uncle Johnny and Bling are definite highlights. With When You Were Young being my favorite. Such a hard 5
