from the other thread...
why had you assumed I would like this? I guess it's always hard to tell. Maybe if I'd been thinking of Swans while listening the result would have been less enjoyable?!

Idk, I guess I never pegged you as a fan of the early-no-wave / barren post-punky sound. But to be fair that was almost entirely speculative/conjecture, now that I'm thinking about it I don't really have a good basis from which that assumption was formed. I know you don't love "early" Swans but I guess that's more of Filth/Cop, which tbh are totally different from their self-titled EP and the record Gira released under the Circus Mort moniker (i.e. stuff much closer to, like, James Chance and the Contortions).

yeah, I'm honestly not sure where to stand on the subject currently. It's somewhat of an unknown quantity, but my love for This Heat shows potential. I suppose the relative barrenness of SOME no wave stuff may be difficult for me to overcome. I don't feel like this is THAT sparse tho. I think the Branca-esque moments / chords are keeping me interested because I just like the sound
The opener is an obvious highlight here. I'm also quite enjoying the live bonus tracks "Where the Red Fern Grows" is a cool song

For some reason I always thought 'Bad Moon Rising' was their debut, I'd not even clamped eyes on that weird, not at all Sonic Youth'y, cover art before.
Guess I check this some time!

It was 'reclassified' at some point, as most sources did treat it as an EP previously, I believe
The band consider it their debut LP
|

Ah, that might explain it...but there is another album between this and BMR? Was that ever considered the debut?

Yeah, there’s Confusion is Sex, which was also re-released with their Kill Yr Idols EP. I’m surprised to see that wiki refers to CiS as their debut, I also thought their s/t is considered as the debut album by the band. Btw, as much as I love Steve Shelley’s drumming, Richard Edson’s work on this is amazing with that tribal sound.

Clear as mud then! I'll try and listen to both soon anyway...see if either warrants Sonic Youth debut status

The tribal drumming is absolutely rad, agreed there
I'll be checking that Kill Yr Idols EP as part of my more comprehensive SY journey

Kill Yr Idols is great, Brother James is a top 10 SY track for me.
