Any one else notice how the pattern in the way the band evolves from album to album? In each subsequent album, they always seem to keep some tracks that sound like they came from the preceding album.
For example, on Leviathan, the tracks "I am Ahab" and "Island" almost sound like they came straight from Remission. Also, on Blood Mountain, "The Wolf is Loose," and "Hunters of the Sky" still have that Leviathan-esque feel to them.
Then again, maybe it's just me.

2/3 of blood mountain is shitty filler

just out of interest Thor, why do you say that Naked Burn was a filler track on Leviathan?
i thought the melodic vocals added a bit of variety, and the general melodies and structure were great. personally, it's one of my favourite mastodon songs.

Wow, pretty mixed reviews, huh? I think that "Modern Dark Side of the Moon" is pushing it, but it's a solid album for sure.

I find this album to be quite boring and terribly overrated from what I have heard from it.

This album is perfect. No other way around it. I think I'm gonna look through some of the nay-sayer's profiles to see what kind of music they are in to. I absolutely love metal; unfortunately, at least 90% of metal bands repeat themselves or sound like every other metal band. Mastodon is the exact oposite. I love all three of their studio albums; Blood Mountain is my favorite of the three. The riffing is brutal, the solos are solid (shred really isn't everything; take tool for example), and my lord is the drumming incredible! I guess we all have our oppinions...

better than Leviathan as a whole yes, but some of the single songs on Leviathan beat sone of the songs on here

I agree this is better then Leviathan by far. If Blood Mountain had Hearts Alive, Blood & Thunder, Seabeast, and Iron Tusk, then it would be a perfect album. I do think Sleeping Giant is the best track by Mastodon, but that's just me.

i was introduced to mastodon by this album. I must say that i am glad i was.
Pounding beats, frantic riffs and a beautiful one here and there. The band really explores quite a bit but still retains their "feel".
The album is nothing short of superb.
On first listen I liked the wolf is loose, the rest i just listened to and forgot. However, now that i'm starting to really listen to it, I realise how good the entire album is.
Sleeping Giant, Crystal Skull, Circle Cysquath, Colony of birchmen. Bravo.

This album rocks. Uncompromising metal. Really solid riffs. The guitar work on Capillarian Crest is awesome.

easily the most overrated album of 2006... not saying it isn't a GREAT album, just a lot of their sounds seem copied from other metal/metalcore bands

Mastodon is in no way metalcore.

And their sounds are not copied from other bands to be perfectly honest.
Mastodon are pretty original when it comes to riffs.
The crazy country style riff in Capillarian Crest for example.

Has anyone heard their latest song?
Cut You Up With a Linoleum Knife.
It is pretty awesome, nice tongue-in-cheek humour.
