Wholeheartedly agree with everything you said.

I also think Citizen Erased is their magnum opus. Newborn is runner-up magnum opus. Both obviously on OoS. Then you have Bliss and Plug In. Fucking stacked.

Citizen Erased is a great song but dunno, I actually agree with this...

"I loved OoS at the time and for nearly a decade after it dropped, but now I would much rather listen to this. Last 5 songs of OoS are kinda mid really." (2)

Absolution is easily their peak. It feels like I can be 'objective' (ugh!) in declaring that, as it had already marginally overtaken OoS back then (when I was a huge fan). Nowadays, it has definitely held up better

I'm talking relatively here, I mean I'll probably listen to this a couple more times and be done with it - certainly don't think it'll be a keeper long-term, but I've had fun in the meantime (Muse was a time and a place band for me and that time is done). I just revisited OoS and was shocked at how little I cared in comparison. It's like the person that heard what they once did is no more & it was kinda surreal and a little sad - where's my nostalgic buzz?

Absolution is definitely their best and most enduring work.

Yeah... some albums are inextricably linked to a time, place or mindset. You put into words exactly how I sometimes feel when I go back and listen to stuff that I used to be so connected to...

as for this, I think Cryogen, Hexagons & Hush are bangers and there are a couple of other good cuts and this has remained omnipresent throughout half a dozen listens. I'm not sure how much more juice there is to squeeze. Solid effort tho.

chuck those three in a playlist along with Space Dementia, Citizen Erased, Map of the Problematique, Assassin, City of Delusion and most of the Absolution singles (they released like half the album as singles in the end) and call it a day lol

Really feel like I'm missing something with this one. Love the first 4/5 muse albums - were a big part of my early musical taste and growth.

This was... fine... Is it just getting a lot of hype because they've been so wank for so long?

I think that’s part of it, sure.

Yeah Unravelling is my favorite track for sure. Def up there with classic Muse, though not on citizen erased, Stockholm syndrome, newborn, problematique, hysteria level…but YES, it’s up there fo sho.

"took another listen today: Origin is a 4.1 and Absolution a 4. Wow! doesn't come close to either of those, so are you all rating it so high? like fr."

Yeah I'd mostly agree. Idk if I'd say "doesn't come close," especially at its peaks, but even a 3.5 from me is kind of glazing it just because I'm so happy a decent and fun Muse album was released again. A lot of it is cheesy as hell and very down-the-middle so to speak and even for a band whose lyrics were never their strong point a lot of the lyrics are painfully bad lmao. But I've listened to it a good dozen times and don't find myself skipping any tracks, definitely feels like the kind of cheese you just need to inject yourself with once in a while.

insane to see how the ratings of this band collapse so hard, and then finally the rebound with this album.

I'm still not overly convinced by this album, I find it decent but not the big step up I was expecting given the praise its had. I find Resistance better, personally. That album is actually pretty underrated.

I found this to be aggressively irritating, but I'm glad everyone seems to be enjoying it

Nightshift is alright. Matt is starting to sound a little strained.

I think Hush is the best song on this?

Hush is surprisingly really good, but Unravelling takes it for me. Consistent album for sure though. Which is unusual for a Muse album. Usually high highs and low lows (or mild highs and low lows, depending on the album).
