These guys have come a long way since playing for empty pubs around Canada! Proud of them. Nicest dudes

After the drummer left, them leaving their label company to go independent, and the album title name was released I was super worried they were going to take a terrible turn, then I heard the first 3 singles and it confirmed to me that this will probably be their best record yet. Happy they are having fun with what they do while also producing top notch technical DM

"it sounds stupid but he tries really hard to sound stupid so..."
I personally don't think the vocals are silly. I think they're rad considering what the dude is actually doing with his voice. If I want silly I'll listen to Silencer

The vocals really are the highlight of the band imo. The singer mentioned in a video that alternating between inhales and exhales lets him get more words in. Literally a Tenacious D skit but it works lol.

"Vocals may sound silly but the dude is singing at a blistering pace using inhales and exhales. He's literally maintaining his breathing while singing at the same time. Takes a lot of practice and skill to do that convincingly."
Isn't this ridiculously bad for your vocal cords lol

The rapid-fire style vocals remind me of Soda in the Water Cup by Attila

Do I respect the artists I named? YES I RESPECT THEM. I respect these artists for paving the way and serving as the origin point of these genres. But, there simply comes a point of "been there done that" for me when I hear a newly released OSDM album. The riffs are so painfully rudimentary, and the vocals. The vocals have NEVER stood out to me in OSDM, ever. They are so monotone and repetitive. Like watching paint dry. No interesting different pitches. No interesting rhythmic flow pockets, just the bog standard bare minimum every song.

Looking forward to listening to this but damn I wish they didn't go with the title they did lol, if I wasn't already a fan it would for sure put me off checking it out anytime soon

I may change this view as the album isn’t even out yet, but relistening to the singles (half the album out now) and some of the last 2 records, the production and sound design on this is significantly flatter. It’s not enough to stop it being a lot of fun, but it really does feel like the band has honed in on speed as the singular focus here and lost some of the depth and physicality of their sound. Maybe I’ll feel different after digesting the whole thing but had to get thought out there while still fresh in the noggin !

Considering how much shit singers used to get for using inhaled squeals back in the early-mid 00s because it was dubbed "too easy" or "cheating", I don't think it fucks up your vocals more than exhaling screams and gutturals does so long as you have some level of vocal training. I think Oli said he worked hard to train his vocals to do this so I imagine he's doing it as safely as possible.

I think a lot of people are going to automatically write this off at first listen because of how speedy it is, but there are constant hooks throughout this thing. The drumming took a step back imo, and that is the foundation for most of the speed here. New spencer doesn't show the range or creativity of old spencer as of yet. But rest assured they aren't going Yngwie Malmsteen here

You wanna know another reason why I hate OSDM? I have listened to all the most famous music genres growing up. In metal it was thrash, in hip hop it was 90s boom bap, in rock it was classic rock. I've heard these genres over and over again in my adolescence. Over and over again the same Metallica songs, the same Tupac songs, the same The Beatles songs. My brother loved Morbid Angel and other death metal bands. Do I listen to any of these bands now? Fuck no. I simply find all of these artists have named to be primitive by this point, legitimately. I do not feel the urge to listen to ANY of these artists anymore, cause I'd rather see these genres EVOLVE, and not recycle the same ideas over and over again for the rest of eternity. I even see millennials my age no longer checking out any new music anymore. They'd rather just listen to Linkin Park, Evanescence, A Day to Remember for the a millionth time, and not even their new shit, their 2000s shit. I refuse to be like that. I refuse to be stagnant with my music taste.
