Effect-wise and usage of instruments, layers, etc., yeah that's well done. But everything is so washy due to EQ'ing and excessive reverb and delays, it just becomes one big mess. Burials had similar issues but mostly in EQ department. Do agree that that record is very good musically.

I think Marguerite is the only track on this that I’m kinda eh on. Everything else is really doing it for me. I went to listen to other new releases from today and I just wanted to come back to this.

Seems like this is pretty divisive, as most of their releases have been lately! I agree that it’s their best since Burials. Not sure if it’s better than Burials for me yet or not. That album has aged REALLY well imo.

I also agree with Sowing that if this was all things like Nooneunderground especially, it would be an easy 4.5

I think musically this record is fun, mostly disappointed by the production. In that sense it is very similar to Burials.

yeah, I've given up on ever hoping that a Sput average for new AFI will approach 4. I figured that a good outcome is to get around 3.5 like Burials.

Is it just me or is Hunter's bass mixed a bit too loudly on Blasphemy & Excess? This might be the first time I'm complaining about the bass being too loud in an AFI song, since I usually feel like he's too buried (although that also hasn't really been the case since Crash Love).

There's only 2-3 songs on here i'm not too hot on. I absolutely love the rest. That's the first time I've felt close to that in twenty years. Usually it's the reverse. Imo it's their best album since Sing the Sorrow.

It feels like I should be way more into this band. My cursory listening always leaves me with this impression that's like, "wow this band has some cool songs and interesting ideas, they might be really good someday, maybe the next album will the one that actually hooks me for more than a couple spins" but that's been going on for like thirty years.

This one aligns exceptionally well with my taste (I love Sisters of Mercy) but it still feels like I should like it more than I do. Nothing on here besides Behind the Clock really blows me away. Feels like a great direction for them, yet I'm still underwhelmed.

Listened to this last night. It's the best thing afi have done in a decade but it still kinda falls a bit flat. The last song is a nice kick in the ass the whole thing needed. A lot of it felt very samey and forgettable, but the overall aesthetic is great and i like the consistency compared to bodies which felt like a bunch of random songs shoved together.

So as someone who only listened to STS and backwards, is this a total 180 in experimentation? This sounds like it would have been groundbreaking if it was released in the 80s so idk what the hell they’re doing here lol
