If it was all stuff like The Bird of Prey, Behind the Clock, and Nooneunderground, this would probably be a 4.5 lol

yes, some diversity on that goth post-punk beat would've helped

My biggest gripe with Bodies was that it felt like many of the songs were unfinished or demos (partially due to production maybe) and that the album felt more like a collection of singles (partially due to the method it was released 7/11 as singles).

On first listen, this album even with the short runtime does not at all feel unfinished. The production is a big step up and the album itself feels very cohesive. It feels dense, not bare making me want to dive in more to see if it grows. Doesn’t reach the highs of pre-2010 AFI, but feels like a step up from Bodies and an interesting evolution of their sound.

Pretty much agree with that assessment. They just need to vary the sound more and lean extra hard into that dark, stately vibe they had going on Clock.

The second half of this is dramatically better than the first. An EP of just the last 5 songs would be a 4 but the front half is a little too one note from Davey for me. I'm surprised he's kind of the weak link since I love his voice but he has next to no variation in his delivery for the first 5 songs and Spear of Truth is the ultimate offender. Musically, this entire thing is great.

Now, I listened to this on a sunny, 65 degree morning drive to work so I can see this whole package working better for me at night.

I actually don't blame Davey at all, I think his vocals are a strength here and the delivery just comes across a little plain because half the album resides atop the exact same fucking beat.

He just does so much more with his voice on the last 5 tracks. I actually didn't find the songs to be monotonous compositionally, even with them having mostly the same beat. Jade and Hunter do a lot to elevate everything. I'm also basing this off just one listen so far, so I could see my rating going up or down but I was pleasantly surprised with what they brought to the table since I was half expecting every song to sound exactly like Behind the Clock and Holy Visions.

I was so hard up for the singles. Ended up being okay. Maybe a grower, we’ll see

I fucking love this. This is the most cohesive record they've put out in a while, like it actually feels like an album. Bodies was all over the place, although I still enjoy it.

I love this atmospheric gothic sound they have going on during this record. It's very different from other AFI records, as is expected with a new release from them, and I think it's going to grow on a lot of people who aren't too into it right now if they give it a chance.

My main problem isnt the atmosphere or gothic sound but there arent many songs here that grab me or keeps my attention. Apart from the singles i dont really remember much. Only thing i know is that the opener sounded like them trying their hardest to sound like The Cure

Thanks Sowing, I really was pleasantly surprised!! Your criticisms are acknowledged, the lack of variation is apparent (Ash Speck - Marguerite back to back especially) but…I just like the songs quite a lot atm! They are all doing very similar things but Voidward has such an odd structure, ESPECIALLY for them. I think this could be easily remedied with a few more tracks in the mix because honestly I’m so happy with everything here.

Feather, agree with the not feeling unfinished comment 1000%. After Bodied feeling directionless, this is a huge improvement imo

Man I hate the production here so much. What a washed out mess... Makes me want to turn it off tbh

Honestly for me? This just isn’t the sound I particularly gravitate towards in general. I def really like The Cure and ive been getting more into Joy Division, New Order, etc but the genre is still a bit foreign. It definitely feels like AFI, that’s not a question but it feels more like i’m listening to a different project completely tbh. Feels weird to mentally place it with the rest atm

god, i love the production lmao.

also, i did a discog run (in a random order for funsies) before this came out iver the course of the week and i listened to Burials right before this dropped and my god, perhaps the best it ever sounded. I never realized how much each of the choruses in 17 Crimes grew instrumentally. And Jade is doing so many cool things throughout, like I feel like the repetitive IHYS chorus makes so much more sense when you hear how much he is doing. Definitely the biggest grower in their discog, I already acknowledged it as a 4.5 a few years ago and now I’m thinking it really might sit comfortably next to their classics

it’s so weird, it’s not like they haven’t done punk in the past decade (Dumb Kids, So Beneath You, Get Dark, Trash Bat) but none if them felt like such a true return to form like Nooneunderground does. And a true evolution of the formula too, Davey doesn’t need to use any of that signature grit of the pst, he just has to be expressive as fuck. Truly feels like they lit that flame again like it was nothing. Legit one of their new all timers. Would be really cool if they made it a single/gave it all the promotion now that the album is out

It is better than The Blood Album, whatever the last album was, and The Missing Man EP. I would say at least their best since Burials. It has Burials syndrome where it loses me in the middle after a solid opening.
