the 8/9 minute tracks on this thing are so fuckin nice, especially the commanding vox on the first half of "Void Bringer" and the ambiance of "Old Space". not a moment on this album feels dull, even on the more drawn-out songs.

Kingdom and Seers of No Light are my favs so far. So viscious but still super atmospheric.

Checking it out rn, I'm 5 tracks deep. Very solid atmosphere and production but I'm not feeling so moved by any particular aspect of the music atm. Feels like they aren't doing anything in particular to set themselves apart from a slew of current bands. Just feels like *more* black metal. Maybe I'm having a bit of an oversaturation period with the genre and need to take a break. Feel like I'm gonna settle on a 3.5 by the time I finish it, if I do.

Edit: Definitely gets more compelling towards the end for me.

I didn't even considered this being blackened core from a genre standpoint, so that slightly recontextualizes it for me. I guess that when I'm just looking at it as a bm record that happened to be sludge influenced, it seemed a little underwhelming in terms of movement and variation. Closest things I've heard to this would be stuff like Oathbreaker and Celeste, so I guess it's not exactly all that common. I was just thinking of black metal in general. I was comparing it to something like Svartidaudi or Misthyrming in my head, which would read as more interesting by comparison imo. But no, it's pretty sick. I'd rate it something like 3.7 if I could.
