it's been 90% of my listening over the last 2 years or so.......a lot of great stuff has been coming out lately......some folks say metal has been suffering.......seems like death metal is peaking from a density standpoint (number of bands putting out quality material)

Absolutely. Don't get me wrong, pretty much everything being released today, at least as far as dm is concerned, isn't 100% an originator. But there is still a good amount of fresh shit coming out and it keeps me engaged pretty easily.
Titan if you haven't checked out this month's Extreme Measures blog post, I'd give it a read, or at least a glance. Huge wealth of monthly metal information masterminded by Nex. We blessed

Output-, i.e. number-of-releases-wise, yes. As a result there's quite a few good, as in above average releases each week. The density of standout releases seems to have remained at about the same level, though.
Quality- and/or innovation-wise, I'd say the 90s were still peak.

Thanks for suggesting that Ford - I’ve been paying attention to what’s trending from a Nex perspective haha.
And agreed that the 90’s innovation can’t be topped. GOAT quality and albums speak for themselves, i.e. the classics.
I’m an old man and was out of the game for probably 2 decades. Now that I’m kicking the cans around again, I just don’t remember this much quality, consistently, within the genre. The last 4 years have been insane for DM, at least what I’ve heard anyway. You guys submerge deeper than I do though and will always be my sources.
I’m sending shit to my old school boys to listen to and they’re coming back in now too. Because of this site and because of you fellas.
Thanks for that.

This band and Ad Nauseam are the most proficient musicians currently playing dm. Change my mind (unless you say Gorguts, you probably can't).

No arguments here. I'd add Ulcerate to that but no complaints lol.

Ulcerate are insanely good, but feel like they've hit their ceiling when it comes to their exploratory spirit. Would be happy to be proven wrong by their next release.
For Ad Nauseam's next one, on the other hand, I expect nothing less than a new pillar of the disso subgenre, a masterclass in "this is how it's done" if you will.
DS are just untouchable in the bdm space imo. I love and worship Suffo as much as the next guy, but this and Sanguinary are just on another level in all aspects. Hyperbolic? Maybe. Probably. Unfair to compare 90s shit to stuff that came out 30 years later? Yes. Still, my point stands. They've been working on Dharmata II, and I'm fully convinced it will blow 99% of whatever dm comes out the year that finally drops out of the fookin water.

I dont disagree with nex, but I will say that ulcerate, while at the current time not on the cutting-edge of dm, has already had their "this is how it's done" moments. So in terms of who is currently more proficient, it's probably going to be these guys or ad nauseam yeah.
Now as far as whose body of work hits home to me hardest at the current time, it's ulcerate for me, although DS in particular, and ad naus to a slightly lesser degree come close.
Given the time and productivity Ulcerate and DS have had, I wouldn't be surprised to see ad nauseam being my favorite band of all time someday. They have obviously only released 2 albums so far, but they are both classics of the genre imo.
In any case, all three bands are in my top 10 all-time and I love them all

They're all amazing indeed. Ad Nauseam isn't quite on the level of the other 2 for me simply because of sample size. I do agree that both albums they have released are some of the best of the last 20-25 years for sure. Just wish there was more consistency in their release times.

To a certain degree, I don't think it's super fair to discriminate between them based on the size of their discog. Time is a slippery thing and in the world today, there are a lot of obligations that many people have to meet before they can even start to think about making music.
But at the same time, sample size kind of begs to be taken into consideration. If u have 2 different groups/artists whose output is similar in terms of quality, but one has released a fair amount more music than the other, you naturally would most likely pick the one with more music to be the most proficient group.
That said, ultimately it doesn't make a lot of difference who we would pick to be the "most proficient." We are just blessed to be able to hear the sounds they create
