Yeah need to give it more listens, not really my baggage from what I heard.

Not been on a devy hype for awhile but may give this a shot

The thing with Devin is that when you're in the mood for it he's the GOAT. But when you're not, discovering a new album can be daunting.

Yeah, Dev wanted to get this out quick both because of his intention to make something simple to contrast Moth and to have something out this year. So, it is both rushed and a personal statement of grief and anxiety over his kids moving out.
I get the emotional impetus for it, but it still his blandest work to me.

Wow I didn't know that, that it's about his kids moving out. Gives a whole new perspective to this release, gonna have to listen to it again lol.

Devin’s blandest work is still more enjoyable than most alternative rock/metal to me

"Powernerd accentuates this clearly deliberate family-member role that Devin has become for some of us, musically, and even emotionally. We've grown up with him, for better or for worse, and this album feels like one of his most human and personal releases yet."
Beautifully said. Great review

This album is fine, but subpar for Devin. It's very safe (at least in terms of Devy). If you've listened to Devin's catalog there's really nothing new here. Which is fine I guess, but hopefully no more records like this. One of my favorite things about Devin is that you're usually getting plenty of new shit every album.
Also with a title like "Powernerd" I thought this would pretty crazy/out there, maybe a little kooky, possibly somewhat in the vein of Ziltoid, but it's really none of those things. A little disappointing. But still a somewhat solid album with a few bangers, he's doing a lot better than most aging rockers

Gotta bump my score up for Goodbye, what a beautiful song. Maybe I went into this with the wrong mindset, I think the vibe this is going for is "lame but loyal father working on his quirky tunes in the garage". Things are starting to click.

Some of his own thoughts on making this:
"I think the case for intellectualizing one's emotions, leaves not a lot of wiggle room for those emotional extremes. And when I talk about emotional extremes; I've got no desire, intent, or time, to lose myself. Y'know I'm fifty-fuckin'-two man, I don't have the desire to be like ""oh I've gone down some rabbit hole and now I'm lost in this existential quandary"" it's like dude I don't have time. I gotta take care of my folks now, I gotta take care of my sister. It's ROMANTIC to assume that that's something like, y'know, "you're fucked up like you were when you were twenty five," and you could rationalize that sense of self-importance with your work. I don't have that time anymore. But that being said, this is life. This is who I am. Powernerd is an imperfect record. It's a bunch of dumb 80's rock and metal songs, because that's where I'm from."

I love Devy and I support his need to make music in a healthier way. I disagree with his conclusion that going down rabbit holes has to derail his life. He was a new father when he wrote the first four (and best) DTP records and he managed to entertain all those extremes while dealing with going straight edge and raising young children.

I mean, it's Devin, he says he's not going to go down any rabbit holes but we all know he will in some way shape or form. He's gonna have some artistic expression about something, but I feel like he's saying "from now on, my work is going to have a resemblance to my immediate life" and not just all the abstract and crazy shit he's written about over the years. I view this release as a shift in his attitude towards writing music not based on some kind of intellectual epiphany he's had, but more of a direct representation of his feelings on life.
