Yeah this album is nearly perfect. Works as a background album for writing and as a foreground album for deep enjoyment.

As expected this grew hugely on me. Agreed that it works both as a background & foreground album. Best 2024 release for me.

Ngl the first play was mostly in one ear out the other. Felt way too samey in many parts despite being really pretty. This is either a huge grower or a very overrated album

Nah its a huge grower for sure. Took multiple listens to click for me.

"substantive reinvention of his sound" is some hyperbole, man. this is basically exactly what i've come to expect from Toby's sound. i know he's trying new things but the whole product still sounds distinctly Toby Driver to me and esp with regards to how drawn out these compositions are, which for me is a very bad thing when factoring in how homogeneous the overall sound is. it's possible i'm still just not in the right headspace for this, but at 3 listens i'd say i made a solid effort to get into it. i really wish he'd adopt the less is more philosophy in his writing. it's like every idea is stretched as far as possible, with most songs reaching beyond the 8 min mark. it's too draining for my adhd brain to handle. oddly enough, my favourite track is the longest, and the one that's just pure sensory overload at first (the closer), but i think it's because it switches up the vibe a little which is much appreciated at the 1+ hour mark

see paras three and four of the rev for the inarguable adjustments this does make to his found re. arrangement and personnel (and then five for why yep it still fits so snugly into those expectations)
> wish he'd adopt the less is more philosophy in his writing
> it's like every idea is stretched as far as possible
dya mean you wish he'd be more compact? getting maximum mileage out of repetitive ideas and subtle incremental changes is kinda minimalism 101

I should have said stretched as long as possible, because really it’s a matter of ideas being way too long and repetitive, which yeah I get it’s minimalism but there’s actual engaging music on this album and I think the whole experience would be dramatically improved by shaving like 30 minutes off the total run time. I think Toby also does this with maudlin and most of his other projects too, where he has some beautiful but concise ideas and then these super long drawn out yawns. This is a very pretty album that ends up sounding way too samey to me and the praise it’s received is prob the most perplexed I’ve been at a BNM so far this year (currently checking out all the Sputnik BNM before year’s end).

Perfect album for a relaxing background while focus tasking.

I liked this too but I'd tend to agree with Gyro about some points. It does feel drawn out and harder to really get into at that length. I felt the previous album was more engaging and had all the qualities of this one, except with less bloat.
