I relistened to I'll Be Your Girl today and my feelings remain the same. Feels like a release they made just to not totally atrophy. It's not good, but I don't think it's awful. "Severed" shows that they still have it, but songs like "We All Die Young" just feel horribly forced lol
Glad they seem to have their mojo back from the singles for this

Nothing tops Pic(k)aresque, not even Crane Wife.
1. Picaresque
2. TKID
3. Crane Wife
4. Hazards
5. Castaways
6. Her Majesty
7. What a Terrible World...
8. I'll Be Your Girl
And I say that with 1-6 having very small gaps between one another and a gulf between 6 and 7.

First spin, this is definitely better than I'll Be Your Girl and there are some immediately excellent songs ("Joan in the Garden" obviously, but "The Reapers", "Long White Veil", and "Don't Go to the Woods" also stood out quite a bit). Most of the rest is good/very good with "Born to the Morning" being the only one that seemed like a clunker but some of the song structures/melodies and lyrics feel a bit generic by their standards (if not as cringe-y as some of what was on I'll Be Your Girl). Hoping some songs more will grow on me. I do feel this will be a bit hard to rate as a whole since it kind of plays as a pretty good sub-50 minute album with an amazing 20 minute closer kind of tacked on.

Yeah, Boney, I think that's a fair assessment - but there's a good chance most of this will grow on you. It did for me - the early bones of my review were less positive but my perception of the whole album kept on improving.

About a quarter of the way through my initial listen and I'm having a good time.
the flutes on The Reapers made me smile like an idiot. It's just nice to hear them do this sort of thing again

After a first listen, I would say it's a solid 3.5 for me. I still prefer 'What a Terrible World'. I would have removed the drones in 'Joan' and a few other songs and made it a pretty great 45-minute record.
I really enjoy the recurring horns/brass/woodwinds
"some of the song structures/melodies and lyrics feel a bit generic by their standards"
That's my impression as well. Sometimes it comes close to self-parody. Like the story on "Long White Veil" is pretty generic and unconvincing.

I wrote a thoughtful personal review of this album and Sputnik fucking ate it when I tried to submit it. My 2nd attempt just feels phony now.

Yeah, the drones do strain credulity a bit but on the whole this was a fun listen that I'll definitely spin a few more times. Initial listen was probably a notch higher than a 3.5 for me

@Christbait Always use a word doc. So sorry to hear that. I have had that happen a couple times with lists over the years and it SUCKS

No idea what to make of this yet. Burial Ground and Joan are easily the two best songs here and I've already been listening to them for months. The rest of the album has some interesting moments but nothing has won me over.

@Sowing, yeah, I agree those are the two best songs, although I think there are others in their ballpark - The Reapers, William Fitzwilliam, and The Black Maria come to mind. Most of this did grow on me substantially, though, so give it a chance.

The interesting moments I mentioned were Long White Veil (lyrically eh, but pretty catchy!), William Fitzwilliam (very pretty), and brass/woodwinds that occur sporadically across the other songs. I haven't written the album off, but I was hoping the songwriting would be more adventerous and/or hooky.

Yeah I dig this. Riding the high right now so we’ll see if it continues to last after repeated listens. Born to the Morning gives me major Elephant Six vibes and I’m here for it!
