"At least I think it came from a genuine place?"
There is no genuine place that can produce the line "the most loneliest day of my life." None whatsoever. That line reveals the song is an elaborate pisstake.

Have to say that Lonely Day is probably SOAD worst song and is the only blemish on what is otherwise a great album imo.

Album is defn more filler than Mezmerize. It's a shame that Serj's enthusiasm for the band didn't match the band's growth as musicians. When he's really engaged the songs are among their best. Even deeper cuts like Attack, Vicinity, and Soldier Side slay.

wish this and mezmerize were one album with the best tracks from both. still wouldn't top toxicity but it would come close
|

Soldier Side Intro
BYOB
Revenga
Cigaro
Violent Porno
Question
Sad Statue
Lost in Hollywood
Attack
Kill Rock n Roll
Hypnotize
Holy Mountains
Vicinity of Obscenity
Soldier Side
Let's be real, that's a better album than Toxicity.

take vicinity of obscenity off and maybe there's a conversation. but like wtf even is that song. ridiculous even for SOAD standards
|

It's included on there because it's ridiculous. The album needs some levity because every other song, except for Cigaro, is pretty damn serious.
And, unlike Bounce (which is also ridiculous), it's also good.

Vicinity is one of my favorite songs on Mezmerize/Hypnotize. Then again, I've always preferred the experimental, eccentric side of SOAD. The biggest problem I have with this era of the band is that they tended to play it way too safe, especially compared to their earlier output

yeah but "bounce" riffs and is only like 90 seconds. but I always felt that most SOAD songs are serious deep down but are played off in a tongue in cheek way, like "jet pilot" or "x" have pretty damning lyrics but are played with this goofy cadence. "vicinity of obscenity" is basically jim carrey metal. I'm sure you can argue that the lyrics are about something deep (I think the song is about porn addiction or something?) but I ain't arguing, they're just singin' about food and shit.

I mean cigaro is silly with how it presents itself but I’d argue the subject matter is actually pretty serious

"I mean cigaro is silly with how it presents itself but I’d argue the subject matter is actually pretty serious"
My impression of the song has always been that it's a very pointed critique of militaristic political dick-wagging, but I read an interview somewhere where the band talks about how the lyrics were basically just tossed off and the band wasn't thinking too hard about them so now I don't know what to think lol.
Vicinity definitely seems to be about nothing, but it riffs hard and is on here because the music is way more interesting than Bounce and the absurd lyrics are just a lark which don't detract from the song.
