i am tired of looking at that goddamn ajcollins pool soundoff where he proclaims that skee mask takes influence from akira yamaoka/c418 and he calls the album breakcore

yea it's a tough write, I tried myself briefly it's release year. if it connects with you in a deep way it's hard to properly articulate what the album really means to you and the genre

Dug this, but not as much as I was hoping - looooved Dove Mai and Am Der, will give the rest another spin
Pool is a super tough write and I associate it with such a specific time period (coming out of hospital after two weeks of barely moving and needing to constantly eat and rest in order to be anything, all while cramming 2021 and discovering a load of goods I'd missed, all of which sat in Skee Mask's shadow somehow) that it'd be hard to keep focus on The Actual Record. Such a vast cleansing buffer at the end of a weird year hmm
Would love to see something from one of y'all who could do it justice - have faith in both of yous above

Took a listen today. This is a downtempo/chillout album in rugged clothing
Think you nailed it with this sentence: “It pulls you into its orbit with its lush and psychedelic synths and its almost overwhelmingly powerful bass and drums, but at the heart of it all is a deeply cleansing and meditative spirit“

Also idk if the comparisons Ajcollins made in his soundoff are that out there honestly. I can understand how someone might connect videogame music to skee mask’s productions. Same with the breakcore thing, most of skee mask’s tunes ain’t far off from that sort of thing in the fusion approach

glad u dug this, not sure it'll have the staying power of Pool as this was just a knee-jerk review but there's some seriously wonderful stuff going on. played this like 10 times in a row while working today. i'd like to think it helped my productivity

Agree with your uncertainty about staying power, it’s a little too dreamy and understated to pack that same punch but i get the feeling he’s going to follow this up with something even more immense. But you’re right about the seriously wonderful stuff going on, album is full of magic. And I’m glad it’s caught some ears on here!!!
