Ah so the thing you dislike (the emotional atmosphere and the singing) is exactly what's grabbing me I guess

it's probably been said a lot already, but the first part of Void Surfacing is a real moment. I really like this album, it's easily their second best, still need to revisit Stillworld to see which is better. That was my fave album of theirs until now, though I haven't checked it in a couple years

Yes if I hate this and you 5’d it it’s a pretty safe assessment I hated what you liked

I mean it makes sense I found that Spite album really boring apart from like 2 songs and even those aren't anything special to me. Just heavy for the sake of heavy really.

out of spite [2] and because it's a good hint as to where our musical mindsets diverge. He's more into the aggro, the attitude, the riffs, I'm more into the emotion, the atmosphere, the way it makes me feel.

Because she’s petty. I love IA’s first several albums but felt they’ve been tapering off hence my annoyance

ok but a 1.0 seems a bit harsh

Yeah I can be petty and I'm sorry for the snark. It's just kinda annoying I get flamed for my taste all the time but a little bit of snark is off limits.

after jamming all day i think here are my main reservations w upping this to the 4.5:
the pacing of this album does not work too well for me. could be the abysmal choice of dropping elysium/immolation beforehand but neither really feel like they fit here, esp immolation
marcus's singing sounds great on some songs and really bad on others lmao like i kinda cant stand him on parts of purity weeps and absence persistent esp
barely any tuning or key variation on the album makes it feel more samey than it should be. swap without a whisper maybe for another song pushing what emberglow or elysium are trying and itd prob feel more balanced to me

The 'singing' really has few redeeming features. The singing parts didn't annoy me so much on Greyview because everything else was great but now the music is dull I don't even...

bubs hitting the nail on the head. i was listening to it hard this morning to try to pinpoint what's been bugging me about the album, and the pacing is prolly my biggest complaint. i REALLY don't like chill song, banger, chill song, banger, chill song, banger flow from Whisper to Void.
i'm finding myself just skipping Reverse through Purity because of that and Marcus sounding meh

number 2 complaint is probably the Tewers affect on this. they're clearly trying to go for a more accessible sound with more defined song structures and chorus heavy tracks. But I think they over did it, and there really aren't that many stand out moments on this album I find myself going back to.
Sun Sleeps EP imo was the perfect blend of techi riffage with the post metal/rock elements they were going for on Heavener. As If It Never Was' intro provided the post experimentation, but it still brought the heat with the second verse and the breakdown at the end. Sun Sleeps track also has one of if not their best chorus to date because it had a memorable riff to go with it. A lot of Heavener on the otherhand just feels flat.
this will probably end up being a 3.5 for me
